Icing 'Eyes

So, how do you?
Any tips, techniques, advice would be appreciated. Tip ups or jiggin'? Lures or live bait? Shallow or deep? Anything. Thanks.

Go to www.indepthoutdoors.com and watch some of their videos on walleye fishing. They're great learning tools on when, where, and how to find and catch them.

    Chauncy and Bogey,
Thanks for the link. Good stuff. I spent some time last night watching vids and reading articles/posts. I learned a lot. One of the most important things that I learned was that there is a lot of mininformation out there concerning how to catch walleyes. People who go "back to the basics" can do very well. It seems large shiners or sucker minnows on a quick-strike rig under a tip up is an excellent way to catch them. If you are jigging, use a large jighead with a spinner blade on it, tipped with a decent sized minnow/shiner. 14-24 FOW during the day, shallower in the morning, evening, and night.

If anyone has anything to add to this, please do.

How small are we talkin? Swedish Pimples, Forage Minnows, etc? Weights? If you could ask him, I'd appreciate it. I don't get out as much as I'd like so I like to be ready when I do make it out. Thanks.

Keep waiting. I've made a lot of friends here. I treat everyone with respect and am consistently treated with respect. I help others as much as I can. I'm not some troll that just pops in to find out what stream is hot and what color of PowerBait to use. I joined this site to learn from experienced anglers and to share what I know with others. If that is spoon feeding, then I'll go get my bib. Have a nice day.

Thanks Steelhead1994. I'll check those out. I'll get you out after big gills and slabs soon. I've marked some spots on my GPS. I'll share.

If you are fishing Pymatuning pick up some Vibe-E's or other blade baits in 1/4 oz. Get a few natural colors and a few brighter colors.

I've watched a few fishing shows where they kill them on blade baits, but they never show a good picture of them. I'll have to research them just to figure out what they are. Thanks Mote. If I go to Pymie, I'll drop you a line.

I've taking more eyes on lures than on tip ups with minnow. Pymy, blade baits Vibe's, Sonars,Silver Buddies, also Pimples and Castmasters,Forage minnows w/minnow heads.Every lake has it go to lures Chat. lake in NY I've done good on jigging Raps and Pimples. I've only caught eyes in numbers at Pymy and L. Chat. in NY. A handful at Shenango and L Aurthor and a private lake.

Big Tuna, that is excellent. Thank you very much. I really appreciate the help. I hope that I have a few pics to show you guys before ice out. Do you ever tip those blade baits with anything or just rip them?

Forget Tippen them things.......  The extra weight has Always  Messed the action up with my lures...  I  carry a Bottle of Sent liquid with me.... Alot easier to apply and re*apply than baits.....  (plus you have Various Scent Choises, Instead of just Fathead or shinner Flavors )nw/

Plus if you forget the condiments...you can always throw it on your sammiches.

Berkley Gulp Alive Scent smells as though it would go particularly well with tuna fish sammiches.

I fish blade baits clean.I also use a small black snap with a loop knot,I tip all spoons w/a minnow head. I have put a minnow head on the belly treble of a Rap. You really don't rip a blade bait,a small flip of the wrist will move the blade10-12 inches,  let it free fall, then hold it for a few seconds.Hits can come in all phases,on the lift, the drop or the pause. Vibe's come with the right snaps.

I have fished Chautauqua, Woodcock , and Pymy on a regular basis using Jigging Rapalas and Spoons (castmaster, pimples, and others). i usually tip each with a minnow and always get good results on Walleye,Pike, Musky, Perch and Crappy.

Do you think the walleye are in their midwinter holding patterns now or would they still be in their first ice holding patterns since we haven't had much ice? Like in Pymie, there hasn't been much ice, so I'm wondering if they will be in the shallows or down in the deepest parts where they can swim up into the shallows in the morning and evening to feed. I still have an awful lot to learn and I really appreciate you guys helping me out.

Well I'm just going from my 20 + years of fishing walleye that they will be in deeper water during the day and towards evening they will move in the shallows to feed. I caught my biggest eye on pymy around 5.00 pm in about 7 foot of water, it was 8lb 4oz.
