Winter Steelhead

Started fishing for  Steelies in Erie this year, and i think I'd like to attempt to brave the elements and try my hand at some winter fishing. My one question: is it still important to get  on the water early in the winter? or would i be ok arriving around 8 or so? This depends how i plan my trip up for the day. Im not sure if this is corect, but I've always thought you started early due to rising water temperatures with the coming of mid-day. But common sense would tell one that in the winter the temperature would not fluctuate as much/at all. Any help with when i should start my day for optimum fishing time would be greatly appreciated.

Sleep in.  There'll be slush in the streams & letting the sun hit the water for a few hours, DOES get the fish a bit more active as well.  Mid-late morning, even afternoon is bite time in winter.

Ive caught fish early in the winter am-if its above freezing at 730am (sunrise in winter) then ill go.  But if its very cold, i dont hurry.  New years eve it was 26 degrees at 9am, i started catching fish around 10, and the bite did get better at it warmed.  Certainly it is NOT like early season where 6am on the streams is good.  As Spoon said, later is usually better.

Its the fishing, not the catching. Start early and finish late....WF
