I hear you, on the stay hydrated, I do.

E'cept everytime I wear my hat like that, my wife plays the "hey your shoe's untied" game.

Speaking of weed whacking, I quaffed a few brews while sharpening my weed trimmer. However, I did follow the recommendation not to operate the machinery while under the influence.

I don't have much shade left on my 5 acres. 4 big pines got struck by lightning and other poplar trees fell to ice storm. Not a fan of bright hot sun so we makeshift shade around the pool.

We lost our fencer to lightning the other day, it blew the glass fuse in the barn and blew the breaker in the basement. The fencer was very sooty and burned on the inside. Lucky we did not lose the barn. The only new one I could find was solid state and plastic, not like the old metal one with transformers ect. Let's see how long it lasts. I got the extended warranty for $8

Clint, "new 223"?   Do tell more?

I just sighted in my new TC Compass chambered in 5.56 NATO and it do reach out there and touch them varmints.  Mounted a 3 x 9 Tasco World Class scope and been huntin the elusive PA Groundhogs.  Thinking about getting a varmint spot light for some after hours 'yote/fox hunting and maybe an electronic call too.  I just started researching the light and call and certainly would appreciate recommendations from those in the know.

Killer- when I had my place up there targeted Atlantics numerous times in Summer- No luck- but did see some regularly in upper fly wire pool.
Had a real good hit once on a dark spey fly using my switch rod.
My poor results are likely because I really really am a lousy fly guy.
Bumped into Fran the Man once and he told me how its done, and -as luck would have it- have never been back in Summer.
If ya go -good luck and do your homework first---its a nice time on the river no matter what ( bug spray is  NOT optional).
Caddis may well be the trick.

I got a really good deal on a Savage. It's a cheaper gun, but will spend its life on the back of my wheeler so it will live a hard life. There is a Bushnell 3*9 on it,  my first shot out of the box was chuck at 70yds so its sighted good enough.
Funny thing we have had a critter issue for a few months eating grain.  Set live  traps , leg traps even snares, nothing. Today I go down and find not 1, not 2, but 3 coons in the bottom of the grain barrel. I ran up and got  the .22 and dispatched them. Luckily the barrel was almost empty so not much will be lost except the coons

Clint I have a Savage 22 mag bolt action outfitted with a Barska 4 x 12 with lighted recticles and a .17 HMR. Great guns for short range shooting and they've sent many a woodchuck to happy land. Only reason I didn't stay with Savage is they don't offer a rifle chambered for the NATO round. (that I'm aware of)

I went with Thomson Center because of the price and had I waited a few more days before ordering I would have gotten the gun another twenty bucks cheaper.

My 22 mag and .17 do great out to 150 yds but anything past that, I think, is just asking for wounded critters.

Been seeing fox and hearing yotes frequently and I have the capability for 250 yd shots from my deck so, I started looking at the .223 when I found the 5.56 would be available in a bolt action. Same as the .223 with a bit more range letting me take advantage of 400 yd shots when the corn is down and the hay is in.

Plans are in the works to outfit a carryall with a modified bench rest for my tractor which will let me visit my neighboring farm lands. Helping to rid those fields of pesky varmints.

I have a Remington XR-100 223 single shot with a Leupold 4.5 x 14 VX-1 with drop compensator.  I've plinked chucks well over 300 yards with this set up using factory Hornady 55 gr V-MAX ammunition.  I enjoy glassing a field shooting from behind round bales or prone with a Harris Bi-pod.

Nice

Happy to hear you mention the Hornady V-Max..  I been wondering about using that same ammo for long range shots.  For now, I'm using the Remington UMC in .223 and the Hornady Frontier in the 5.56. and limiting my shots out to 200 yds.   If the current weather holds, I should be seeing more hay fields being mowed followed by, the corn and bean fields this fall.

I have my mother's 1953 Remington 222 with peep sights. Its in good shooting condition. Haven't shot the thing in 30 years . Only firearms I've shot in last 20 years are a daisy bb gun, air rifles, 30/06 , compound bow , x bow and a few pistols at targets my friends and family carry.

Cool guns guys, I am just getting into them a bit more. My previous gun was my uncle Garth's 22 short and it just did not have any stopping power at all. It has been retired. Today I shot a porcupine in a tree, well actually though it. Round went clean through a 5 inch tree and dropped it.  I planned the shot to try to contain the bullet a bit as I was shooting up, nearest house was a mile away , but who knows. VERY  happy. Nice weather today, we cut our last 3 lots. Will be done by Monday with 1st cut.  Nice.

Re:Weather thread 2018/07/08 07:31:16 (permalink)
I had bought my wife a reflector telescope for Christmas and we finally got it out last night because it was so clear.

It was a pita getting the finder tube with crosshairs to line up with the main tube (why they don’t line them up at the factory is beyond me), but we got it relatively close.

There were plenty of stars out, but as many as I recall as a kid. I think it is due to the less bright stars getting washed out by surrounding ambient light that we just can’t seem to get away from. My theory is based on looking at a star with the scope and seeing hundreds more through the optics that were not visible with the naked eye.

This whole inverse thing with the reflector will take some getting used to.

The poster formally known as Duncsdad

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Re:Weather thread 2018/07/08 08:17:11 (permalink)
HAHAHA Dardy's I swear, when you said you purchased a telescope I thought you were gonna tell us it was for spotting woodchucks.  You'll have to forgive me for such thoughts, I been sitting in the sun too many hours the past couple days.  Welll OK, years but any-who, I hear ya on the "light pollution" cause it's a fact.

My biggest gripe is those stupid communication towers having the stupid strobe lights firing off, looking like lightening in the sky's. The red beacons are bad enough but dam if you're near a tower and those white strobes ignite it's almost like you can feel static, as when a nearby lighting bolt fires.

I never got along with telescopes 'cause by the time I found a object using the spotter scope, it would move and be gone before I could focus the main scope.  That and the objects began pulling down their shades!  What....?  Wait!!

We just got about 3 minutes of sprinkles.
Last rain here was 10 days ago and it wasn't much at all especially with no rain and heat all week prior.
