Outriggers?

Anybody ever use 'em? I got a set with my boat and have never used them, but I'm getting them rigged up and ready to try them next year. They may not reach as far out as boards but I'm thinkin' they ought to work...

For eyes I think you are better off using big boards to get as far away from the boat as you can with the clear water.
Where they do work good is the trolling near shore at the creek mouths when targeting steelies. You get more lines out in the water but you aren't cutting a 100 yd or more swath with boards and having to do the old 2 step with all the other boats and the shore anglers....

How many clips are your outriggers set up for?  1/2/3?

If they are really stout, ocean going style outriggers they may be helpful running more lines for a dipsy only program.  You need some pretty beefy ones to handle a couple big dipsies though.   The fiberglass ones probably won't cut it.

I saw a picture in a magazine of a boat using them as planer masts. Only they had the pulley not even half way out.  It seems like this would help keep the planer line from going into your rods on sharp turns, or when a newbie is driving and both of your planer lines end up on the same side of the boat

Actually taking the boat out next year?
Or just getting tired of mowing around it?

Figured it would take up more room in the barn this way...

They are aluminum and seem pretty beefy, was thinking about running Dipsys off of them as well as weighted lures. They are simple to operate which would help on rougher days with greenhorn crews...

Hoping someone with some experience with them chimes in... in theory they seem like a good alternative to the big boards if you routinely only use the boards for 2 or 3 lines each side.  I would think there is better control for turns also, and not affected much by wave action.
Many times we opt to not put out the big boards when it would just be for a couple of lines, outriggers may be an option.  Would be interested in hearing th pros and cons.

It's funny...I always wondered why the billfish fishermen didn't use planer boards to get more rods out.

Because planer boards get eatin' in saltwater. Lol, seriously.

And they troll quite a bit faster.....the majority of the time. Don't know what planers would do at 5+ knots.

Like eyez' said, too close to the boat.
If you do run them, I'd suggest long lines, i.e., 7-10 color lc's or 200' - 300' coppers.
I always say if I could only run one line on Lake Erie, it would off of a planer board at least 50' away from the boat.
