It's been awfully quiet in here lately...

I've been out here and there as time allows and have been seeing lots of rutting behavior for the last week and a half.  Still haven't been able to catch up with a good one though and nearly all of the activity I have been seeing has been the youngins.  I'm still having a lot of fun watching them chasing and grunting like there is no tomorrow.  I am off next week so I will get the last 8 days of the season to hunt and so far the weather is looking good and my hopes are high that a good one will finally stumble my way.

How has everyone else been making out?

Same here, flu, work and kids stuff has taken precedence, plus, I don't feel like getting soaked to the bone when hunting anymore!  Could have been out there yesterday when the center of the storm was over us, though.  It wasn't too windy nor raining to hard, most of the time.

I am going to try and go out for a couple hrs this evening after work since trick or treating was delayed until Saturday evening....

Looks a little breezy out there though and still rain/sleet/snowing.

I don't bow hunt anymore, so I've got no skin in the game right now . .

But deer were on the move yesterday evening where I was at in 2B.  Had my 8 y.o. son out chasing squirrels.

On the way there, at about 4:45 PM, deer were out in fields on the feed.  Shortly after we settled into our spot, a little 6 point worked past us.  10 minutes later, a small 8.  And then the biggest buck I've ever seen on this particular property. Think it was only a 8 point, but he had mass and width like I've never seen on a buck in that area, but then again I'm used to seeing 1.5 to 2.5 year old deer.  He was probably a little older.

When I used to bowhunt, I'd always set my ladder stand close to where we were.  Had I been in it, I would have had a chip shot at that bruiser.
Saw a few does in the parade too, and many more out in fields on the way home.

Needless to say, after seeing that buck, my son is absolutely stoked about the upcoming deer season.

Good luck to all you guys in the next few weeks.  Even though I don't bow hunt anymore, I still really enjoy checking in here and reading the updates.

I got a good 9 point last week mid-afternoon in a light rain while hunting on the ground. Will try to get pics up eventually. They are moving good in 1B in these damp cool days. Just not very many of them to move.

After 5 straight days of rain from Hurricane Sandy, I couldn't take it anymore and hit the woods this afternoon. It was raining the whole time but under the tree umbrella it was tolerable. Ended up having a pretty decent night. Had a pretty decent 7 point nudge some does right under my stand. After the does moved off, he hung around within 10 yards of me for several minutes. I lined up the crosshairs, put pressure on the trigger and mentally double lunged him.  Always nice to watch a buck walk off that you passed. He will be bigger next year for someone else.

Had a 1.5 yr old 5 pt. directly underneath me last night.  He sniffed every briar, twig and leaf that I walked in and brushed against and was eating the green leafs of the jagger branches.  I had just recently washed all my clothes again in DDW and I wasn't sweated up.  At least he didn't spook but he definitely smelled something.  Don't know if I would have gotten away with that with a shooter.  I could have jumped on his back and went for a rodeo.  Other than him, one big, fat raccoon.

Looks like I may head out tomorrow AM but it looks like it might be windy.
Good luck fellas.  Starting to get short on time.

Man those north winds saturday and today were chilly...

I'm still struggling to catch a good one on his feet during the day.  Been seeing lots of youngins chasing and grunting so I suppose its only a matter of time before the right buck comes my way.

I'll be back at it tomorrow morning.  Looks like its gonna be another cold one too.

Only saw a doe and a fawn this AM.  Had a yote yipping on the hill above me about 60 yds away as i was climbing my tree.  It had to be him/her coming by me a short time later but it was still too dark to tell what it was.  Definitely wasn't a deer the way it was moving but was too big to be a coon.
Been awhile since I felt 24 degrees on an archery stand.  It got a wee bit chilly when the breeze kicked up.

I think I picked the wrong tree today.

Had a buck come through trotting and grunting right at first light just over the hill. About an hour later the woods errupted and I could hear what sounded like 2 or 3 bucks chasing a doe hard for 15-20 minutes, just over the hill again.  Guess where I will be tomorrow?

Was 25* this morning when I pulled in and tomorrow they are calling for 27* in the moning...BRRRR

Re:Any kills today?? 2012/11/07 11:51:07 (permalink)
Well, probably had my chance today and it didn't happen.  Had my bow drawn on a nice 18" wide 3.5 yr old 8/9 point that was at 20 yds but he was facing me and was behind brush.

Morning started off with a mom/fawn going by at 7 yds in the gray light (6:25am).  Then, at 7:10am a lone doe strolls through.  At 8:10am, I see a group of deer with tails up crossing the road coming towards my stand in the creek bottom.  There are 4 in the group, 2 doe and 2 fawns.  They eventually cross the creek and mill about around 5 yds from my stand.  I look to the right of the direction they came from and see a couple deer.  I VERY slowly get my binocs. up and notice a doe and a decent buck about 60 yds out in the thick stuff.   The tree I was in stunk and I was skylined.  One of the doe below me start the stiff legged walk but I can't even move my head to look.  All of a sudden the far out doe busts out and is coming my way with the buck following.  Unfortunately, their approach took them downwind and he was on a beeline to the base of my tree.  B/w the my scent and his head bobbing up and down when he was loping through the brush, he stopped at 20 yds facing me and behind a thick bush.  I could tell now that I was going to try and take him.  He stood there for 5-8 mins. (not really sure) looking at the doe, looking at me, looking at the other group of doe who are now about 30 yds out from me.  I could tell he was sampling the air and he knew the blob in the tree didn't look right.  I only had my fingerless gloves on and in my handwarmer around my waist so at this point, my fingers are numb.  Then, the hot doe decides to move around me at about 20 yds and through a few openings.  I think "golden" as he starts to follow her path.  He goes behind a thick bush (but not thick enough, I guess) and I struggle to get my bow drawn.  Between the extra layers of clothes and me being cold, I think it took me 15 seconds to draw the bow (without letting down) and I think he caught movement when I did.  He stopped following her and slowly walked out to about 40 yds in thick stuff and was looking right at me.  The doe finally gets tired of that and wants to play so she bounds off the way she came with him close behind.  By this time it was after 8:30 and my fingers feel like they are about the fall off.  Wouldn't you know, after I got warmed up, I drew the bow again and had no problems whatsoever.  Oh well.  At least I finally saw my first shooter this year and had some good action.  Goes to show you no matter how bad a season, this time of year anything can happen at any time.  You just have to be out there.  If only one less bush or I picked a different tree or they came at me from a slightly different direction, I may have been posting my own success pics.  Still a few more days......

I Blew it on Tuesday afternoon. The buck are startin to get fired up, so I broke out the decoy. It took seconds to get a monster to come in and I blew the shot. I miss calculated the distance and put the bolt in the dirt. :(

Got busted by a doe this morning trying to move into shooting position.  Should have waited her out.  Looked like she was completely behind a tree but she must have had one eye poking around the side.  If I had another chance I probably still would do it the same way.  Just bad luck today I guess.

Best evening for me so far tonight, thanks to my cousin.  Cut my AM hunt short to run from Gibsonia to Elizabeth to help him drag out and hang his 8 pt he harvested this AM.  Got that done and rushed into work for my 1/2 day and then back out to his stand he graciously offered up.  Ended up seeing a shooter 8 pt and a poper (quick est. from me through the binocs is 130-140") 10 pt chasing two smaller bucks through a field about 80 yds away.  It was starting to get dark and he started walking off so w/o anything to lose I snort wheezed at him, he stopped, and started coming my way.  I thought "bingo" and got ready.   Well, he made it 30 yds from where he was to the edge of the woods and peeked in, didn't see any action and starting walking up the treeline and out of sight.  I snort wheezed again and unfortunately, this time he started to trot off.  Hopefully I didn't blow it for the AM hunt there.  Did have a doe and a fawn to my left when the first shooter 8 was walking by and kicked out a couple more in the dark on my way out.

know the feeling Claypool313 ....got busted too this morning ,in stand at daybreak saw 7 or 8 deer sneaking through the thicket into a clearing but probably 80 yds from me about 8:00 so figured they're gone. Anyhow the excitment is over and I settled back into scanning the woods, then I start getting cramps .....no I say to myself this is not happening !!!  but yes it is ...NATURE IS CALLING ...I fight it for about 1/2 hour but getting worse, so I decide to head back home ...lower my bow down ,start climbing down the ladder, hear something ....I turn around to see 4 doe probably 25 yds away  running back up the path......so YES I guess you'll have days like this , saw 1 more doe this evening  but pretty small....so hope tomorrow morning is better !

Best of luck E&G, sounds like your onto him.

Last 2 days have been strange for me.  I've been seeing intense chasing right at day break, but then about an hour after first light the woods have been going dead.  Afternoons were fairly slow and the few deer I did see were acting as if the rut was the farthest thing from their mind.

Still haven't seen a shooter from stand yet either.  Which is pretty wild considering the amount of young bucks I have been seeing.  Maybe tomorrow will be the day...
