Chasing a mysterious ker-plunk!

Hey Guys,

Theres this thing that has been bugging me, and I'm wondering if anybody with more experience than me would have some insight on it.

I usualy look for riffles, a run and idealy followed by a nice pool to fish in when I'm looking for a spot to fish. I'll usualy be just downstream of the riffles  and either throwing a nymph or streamer just above them or just below, letting it drift and givin it a few jiggles.
Over the course of the time that I'm doing this I'll here the "Plunk!", just about the same as if you drop a decent sized rock into a pool, comming from the riffle.

Does anybody ever start casting toward that sound? It seems to me like a fish in there jumping at whatever is comming down through. Anybody ever catch anything like that, or am I just chasing smething that isn't there?

Could be a fish, could be a kingfisher too.   I'd watch for one of these flying off before I went running in chase of the "kerplunk".  Allot of times they'll perch themselves on a limb overlooking a riffle, and repeatedly dive bomb minnows/chubs every few minutes.

Could be fish, but if there is a steep bank nearby it could be pieces of shale or sediment falling in the water. This is a fairly common occurrence during the freeze and thaw cycles. Just a thought

somtimes in fast water you will here a kerplunk and its usually just the way that the water is rolling over somthing over the bottom, every once in awhile you will just hear a kerplunk when the water changes, ive had the same thing happen to me numerous times thinking there was a trout nailing somthing in the riffles.

I've considered all of these possibilities, and certainly can't eliminate any of them. May even be clumsy ninjas. I've lost a couple of flies on the back cast that seemed awfull suspicious, and ninjas like sharp stuff.
