5wt pack rod under 18"

Little project that I just finished up.  Got a request for a 9.5'-10' 5-weight that would break down to be under 18", with the ideal length of 9'-10".  Searches turned up no blanks that would fit the bill.

He told me that Cabela's has some 6-piece blanks, but they were too short.  I told him that I could possibly add a section to the butt end to get what he was looking for.  Fast forward a couple weeks...he had to come to my house to pick up a repair.  He shows up with the Cabela's blank, a 8'6" 6 piece.  Guess I got the job!

I take a few measurements and find a rod in my 'garbage can' the should work.....the mid-section of a broken SCIV crankbait rod.  I trim out the section that i need and strip the paint off of it.  Some careful sanding, cutting and filing and I have the 7th piece!  I wish I would have taken some pics during the build, but here's the finished product.

Blank: Cabela's Stowaway 6 (8'6" 5wt)
Reel Seat: American Tackle AW16SKC-T
Insert: Big leaf maple (blue) finished with Tru-Oil
Guides: PacBay TiCh
Winding Check: Batson AWCC
Grips: Pre-formed natural cork (I HATE these, but he's gonna rod-wrap the cork.)
Decals: Bil-Mar rainbow trout and Decal Connection black over silver

never thought of the suitcase... or saddle bags

what are you thoughts on performance?
    you get to cast it?
i have never really understood the 6 or 7 pc rods... i can't think of that much advantage over a 4pc
but the loss of performance would be much greater

Actually, I misunderstood him.  He wanted it to fit into his carry-on, not suitcase.  The only advantage of a 6 or 7 piece rod over a 4 piece is size when disassembled.  there are no 10' rods out there that will break down to 18".

I didn't cast it, but he did when he picked it up.  He liked the way it cast.  said the extra section made it feel faster, which it should have.

friend of mine has a 6wt.  LLBean multi piece travel rod that he takes along when he's on his bicycle. he loves it and when i see him use it the rod is very fluid.
