TFO Finesse 5'0" 0.5wt

Just saw this on a few blogs/sites/emails over the past day.

I know we've got our share of ultralight fly anglers here.  Thoughts on this one?

With the short length, if they keep the action crisp enough, I think it has the potential to be a real winner for tight quarters brookie fishing.

I like it, but since it's a 0.5weight(keep in mind I never touched anything under a 3wt) I would be afraid to take it brookie fishing, to many chances of it breaking if you're not careful.

troutguy, with due respect, that's like saying "as someone who's always used a pocket knife, I'm afraid of picking up an exacto knife, for fear of breaking it".

It's just a different tool.  You can break either one, easily, through abuse, but used properly, they're equally useable.

KJH, thanks for chiming in.  Coming from you, that's high praise.

Yeah I understand.  Just personally my main brookie rod is a 3 weight and probably wouldn't go any lighter just due to clumsiness and such in tight quarters, etc. but yes if used properly with care then it would be a great tool.  Didn't look into the rod yet, so I don't know anything about the price, but assuming it's pretty pricey.  Just my honest opinion.  Still going to look into it just for the heck of it though.

Btw, what's it like casting a 5ft fly rod?  My shortest rod is a 6'6" and love it for tiny streams, but always wondered what a 5 footer would be like.

MSRP is just over $150 I think, so its affordable by most fly rod standards.

I'm kind of interested to see how it will handle myself...

i'd have no fear of "breaking it"

my "trout" rod is a 7'9 2wt... and i feel like thats overpowering for most of PA mtn freestoners

    i have a 5'6 rod that i dig
(i was actually casting it lastnight)  30-40' is the sweet spot... but it will stretch to 70 but its not a fishable cast
wouldn't thinking about nymphing with it
    dries and small streamers

short rods are fun and allow for great casting in tight situations

I thought my 6'0 2 wt tfo was small, guess not.

The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me.

Had the chance to cast one last weekend. Certainly different but it's a great tool for small cricks and tight spots.  I liked it.

Where would someone find a .5 weight line?

From what I have read people use a 1 or 2wt line with it.  I don't even think they make .5wt lines lol.

i think it was paired with a 1wt line when i was casting

there is nothing really in "1/2 wts"... unless you count like aGPX taper that has the grain wt to make it a x.5wt on paper

I have a pair of Orvis Superfine One-Weights - the six-footer and the seven and a half footer - best fly fishing investments I ever made. I cast flies and catch fish that were not intended for a one-weight!

    Let's go fishing!

I guided a dude who had a custom built .5 weight....really fun little rod in the right setting. he said he never fished with nymphs because he was worried about the BH coming back and hitting the rod.  i always think rods are personal preference. some guys hate the light rods, but i bet its a blast flickin some dries in tight plunge pools

How much T-14 to get the intruders down to the bottom when you're using the 0.5wt, KJH?

Seriously thinking I may try rolling one up if they have em as blanks.  Might be a nice winter project.
