Round Lake had 3 inches a few days ago. I'm sure it's up to 4 or 5 by now. Big snow storm won't be helping matters much. I believe sleds are allowed, but you can't park at the state launch with the trailer. You'll be ticketed.

Anybody been over the 9P Bridge to see how it looks?  How about Toga's lonely little sister ?  Hoping the wind blew some of that snow off.

I'll be looking to get out someplace on wednesday morning for a while, weather permitting. Hook if you're going out, let me know where... hopefully i'll get some reports of places.

Went over bridge on sat, open water until lees park then snow covered ? BRING A BAR!  With the snow I won't go out, and I'm nuts I'll go on a inch of black ice and fish a hole until waters around it, but snow covered slush ice forget it! To cold for me to go swimming. If that snow floods and makes slush and im sure it did, and the single digits for tonight.there should be 6in of snow ice by the weekend but I would still walk with the bar.

Yank, I'll be hitting Round on Wednesday. Probably wait for the sun to rise a bit just to be on the safe side. I'll check the ice today just to make sure. Get back to you tonight.

Hook- What will you be driving?  I'll look for your car.  Hopefully the little bait shop is open, if not I'll just jig I guess.
Working at the PO, and this being the busiest week of the year, I could get stuck working til 4am or later tonight, which will force me to cancel.  Otherwise, I'm going to get out of here as early as possible.  Let me know how it looks, for sure.    seeya

    Hi Guys:

The crazies are out at Spier Falls cove on the Hudson in the upper cove at the NYS Boat Launch.  Was over there Saturday and one guy caught a small pike.  Also, there have been ice fishermen out on Lake Lonely, but it doesn't look too safe for me to go out.
Saratoga Lake is still not buttoned up, but yesterday there was a guy out off the NYS Boat Launch jigging.  Let me know about when you might be out on Round Lake and I may come down to join you.  Please give me an idea about where you will be fishing and I will bring along some extra bait.
Can't wait to get started, but I'm not that anxious to go out at Spier Falls until that gets more solid.  Same for Lake Lonely, as the feeder stream at the  far end seems to keep the ice not looking so safe.  You just can't access that lake from the South end because of all the homes and the trailer park.  Long walk in from the North end off Union Avenue Ext. just past the golf course.

Couldn't make it to Round today. Crazy work schedule had me sleeping most of the day. Shift work is rough.

Yank and Ed. I plan on stopping by Round to check the ice some time in the morning. If all looks well, I'll head up to 'toga for bait and get on the ice around noon. The little bait shop in Round Lake didn't have bait a few days ago, and they said it doesn't look good for them to have it any time soon. I think they don't want to go through the paper work of all the new rules in place.

I'll pm you my cell #. I keep it on vibrate when I'm sleeping, so you can call anytime without worry.

hiya Ed...  I'll be at Round lake, parking right on rte 9 northbound. I have a silver taurus and I'll be the guy with the black/blue coat and a beard. Only going for a couple hours, probably about 830ish to 11 or so.
Hook- I'll give a call before I head up. I'm foregoing the tipups this time out I think.
If somebody is hitting a bait shop and can grab a extra pack of maggots or spikes or whatever they call them, I'd pay you when you got there. Otherwise I'll use Gulp, no biggie.

On wednesday 12/19 Round Lake had about 4" of good ice, with about 15" of snow on top. A bit slushy entering at the boat launch, it hardened up after walking out a ways. Not ideal, but fishable.

I didnt get anything jigging outside the weeds,  straight out from the launch about 100-150 yds.  Didn't want to go too far with unknown ice safety.  A friend caught a couple perch and a carp of all things, on tipups before i left.  Don't know if Eagle Ed jigged any up. I'll probably stay off now til after christmas

Ed jigged up another dink perch. I described that "carp" to a co-worker, and he says it was a sucker. Who knows.

Ice is iffy. May try Thompsons Lake my next day off. I hear there is plenty of good ice there right now.

Not sure how it will be after the rain, but did see guys out on Lake Lonely and that is usually good for perch with first ice.  Also, has some hugh pike if you use large minnows/suckers on your tip-ups as you jig for perch.  Long walk in from Union Avenue Ext. on trail.
Saratoga Lake was giving up some nice perch by the marina, but the ice wasn't that safe Friday and with the rain I'm not sure it would be safe at all.  You might want to check at Saratoga Bait & Tackle (located just across the 9P bridge in the Stewart's Shopping Center across from the Anchor Inn).

Thanks Eagle!  I will make sure to check out Lake Lonely. If I wasnt ill of health I would go up north to Lake Placid like I used to. But I have to stick around Saratoga region for now.

    Nikki:

Was out on Saratoga Lake today by the marina and had some luck with about twelve perch.  Didn't do anything on tip-ups.  DO NOT WALK OUT FROM STATE PARKING LOT UNDER THE BRIDGE AS THAT ICE IS ALWAYS LAST TO FREEZE.  By the marina the ice is about 3" thick on the bottom with about 4" of frozen slush on top.  I fished from 7am until 11:15 and had to keep moving just to find the perch.  I found there were more as you got closer to the marina docks just off the weed bed.
Saw plenty of people fishing Lake Lonely the past few days, but I was too lazy to walk in from Union Ave. Ext., so I fished Saratoga Lake.  Moreau Lake is now frozen for ice fishing, as is the two coves at Spier Falls on the Hudson.

Good info Ed, any size to the perch? Great Sacandaga also has about 3 inches under 6 inches of frozen slop. There were 4 guys out fishing yesterday on the south basin. Here comes another load of snow on top of that.

None of the perch were larger than 10/11" and were hard to find.  I kept moving around with little luck in one area.  Usually on Saratoga Lake you find them schooled up and not too difficult to catch a couple dozen.  Tried Spier Falls today and got zip on tip-ups or jigging.  Fished for about 3 1/2 hrs. from 8am-11:30am with large minnows on three tip-ups and medium minnows of the other two tip-ups.  Jigged with all kinds of lures with not one hit.
Looks like my best luck will be Saratoga Lake or Lake Lonely from now until the ice really sets up at Spier Falls.  Have seen some nice sized walleyes taken at Spier Falls from 9-10:30pm, but ice doesn't look that safe to be out wandering around during the night.

Spier Falls NYS Boat Launch is Exit 16 on the Northway (if you are coming from the South take a left at the top of the ramp on to Ballard Road, from the North do a right turn on to Ballard Road).  Take Ballard Road across Route 9 and over the mountain (very slick road when it is snowy/icy, so be cautious).  When you get to the bottom of the mountain on the other side you will come to a stop sign.  Turn right and continue about 3/4 to 1 mile and parking area will be on your left.  I fish the left side, while others like the right side after walking path through the woods.  There are pike, perch, crappie, bluegills, brown trout and walleyes (though most of these are caught in the evening after 9pm).
Just realized you live in Mayfield, so you would go north on Route 9 from Saratoga Springs until you see the sign for Mt. McGregor Correctional Facility.  Take a left there and follow above instructions after going over the mountain.

Went out with my neighbor on Saratoga Lake yesterday afternoon from 1-2:30 (as he had company coming-short trip).  Caught three perch, but did notice another guy closer to the inlet past the marina with some nice perch.  Lots of weeds down that way, but once you find perch they are nice sized.
May give it a try this afternoon, but there is plenty of water on top of the ice, so bring good waterproof boots.
You won't have any trouble finding me as I usually wear my old beat up Philadelphia Eagles Jacket.
