Looking for an inexpensive used .22 rifle, preferably a youth model but will consider full size also.

UPDATE 1/12/08 I purchased a new savage mark II.  Thanks to all who replied.

Thanks for the reply PaBassmaster.  I did consider your .22 earlier.  I was going to start my son on open sights then maybe graduate to a scope.  Mounting a scope on your savage sure would be a challenge.

Yes it would be about impossible to put a scope on it. Its a great gun for a beginner tho, thats why i had asked if you had taken a look at it. I do have a mossberg .22 with peep sites and a 3x9 scope i might get rid of but its a semi and not the best beginners gun (no safety on it!)

dont know what you want to spend and dont know how old your son is, but you can buy a brand new "pardner"(new england firearms) single shot 22/410, 22/20 gauge versa pak for around $140. wont help you with a scope, but its safe(single shot) and you have 2 guns.

gander mountain in washington had used youth .22 and 20 gauge shotguns. didnt see any combos, and dont know how much they got picked over for christmas, but there were youth models for around $70-$80. dont remember all of the models.

Thanks for the info Commander.  I have considered the versa pack or the NEF Sportster but have been unable to find one locally.  I have been a fan of NEF since I bought my NEF Sidekick 2 years ago.  I have had offers to order the versa pack or sportster but I would like to see it before purchasing.

Regarding the scope I assumed the 22 barrel was drilled and tapped for scope rail.  Is this not true?

I checked at my local Dicks but I did not think of Gander Mountain for a .22.  I'll have to check them out when I am in Erie over the holidays.

CB,  What type of action / model number is the Savage? I stopped at the the Dicks in Butler but all the had in stock was semi-autos.  Did you see this in stock at a different Dicks?  It seems I picked the wrong time of year to shop.

    Thanks,

i stopped at gander mtn washington today and they have ZERO USED guns in any caliber. place is picked clean. cheapest youth .22 i saw was $149.99.

i cant answer your question on the scope for the .22. i bought a youth 410 pardner(new england firearms) at the last minute and the ONLY place that had one was ace sporting goods in washington. if you want a gun, 9x out of 10 they have it. i wanted the versa-pak but was in a pinch(last minute gift), and they only had the shotgun. i paid around $120.

I have a 22 pump that needs a little work, the gun is old but operational. The pump release button is like jello, would need to see a gunsmith. Id let it go for prob $100, its a remington I do belive. It just sits in the gun cabinet.

Jeremy, Thanks for the offer but I was trying to find something a little closer to my area.  A remington pump for $100.00 is a good deal if repair parts are available.
