Streamer Fishing Setup

By the time spring rolls around, I hope to have a heavier 6-8wt setup for smallies, large trout on larger rivers, warmwater kayak fishing, and any salt I may encounter. Started out thinking a short, fast 6wt, but now I'm leaning toward an 8wt, still fairly short and fast. Considering the TFO TiCr X, Ross FlyStik, and others...but at the moment, the front runner is the Redington Predator, probably the 7'10".

The jury is still out on the reel, mostly because if I get a 6wt, I have a reel for it, but if I go 8wt, I'll need to get one for it.

That leaves line. While I'd like to have a few lines available to use, including a full floater, sink tip, and maybe some sort of intermediate or sinking line, I'll probably start with just one. Looking for opinions on which I should start with, and within that range, any specific recommendations.

Right now, I'm liking the idea of a Rio Outbound Short...either in the full floater or a sink-tip (slow or fast sink not yet decided).

Thoughts, comments, etc?

    I'd go with the 6-weight.

8 weight. 6 weight gets you nowhere.

I have a TiCX that I just bought from someone, and haven't had hardly a chance to use it.

SA Streamer express sink tip line. If the tip is shorter than 20 feet there isn't much of a point in using a sink tip, because you can't get very deep with a 10' tip May as well just loop on a length of T-14 or T08 or nothing.

If you're going to go in, go in. Don't dance around the edges and go halfway like a big flapping vagina.

    lmao

    Duly noted.

So by that rationale, get a good dense fast sink rate too, while I'm at it?

For small water I use a 4wt...I'll have to try a sink tip on it.

    A raft?

Bass Pro has a 8,9,10 wt 7'10 they are called heat fly rods. I bought a 8 and 10. The eight will throw 90ft of wt forward with big streamer fine. Took the 10 down to nc this fall was throwing 100ft of intermediate running and 400 grain sink tip to the backing. Price is $99.00. They are great for casting short cast under low hanging brush and boat docks. Wish they had a 6 wt.

Sharpe, sounds like a rod similar to what I'm looking at. Redington has the Predator in 7'10" in 6wt and 8wt, and I believe 9 and 10wt in 8'3".

D-Nymph, you gonna float that thing down Elk creek next October?

    cold,

for what it is worth, and i know, not much, I am set up with an st croix imperial 8 wt, and a konic reel. i cant say enought good sh1t about the konic, the imperial isnt bad either. i have some full sink SA, i think streamer express, but, it is a b1tch for me, it is slick, and i dont fish enough anymore to be good with it, im not used to casting big stuff, and it is a whole different world. now with the floating line, i am fine, no real problems, but, if you arent used to sink line, it takes a while to get used to. ive only had mine out a couple of times, but, i figure with some practice, it wouldnt be too hard

I have a Lamson ULA that I love, and while I can make a reel I already have work in the short term, I'll likely get a reel just for this setup, and Lamson is near the top of that list.

You definitely do not back cast with a sink tip like most people are used to with a 5 wt and dry flies.

yeah, there is something to it, something that i need to figure out, but really dont give myself the time to do, im an ****hole to myself

most places i fish anymore, i can get away with floating line, but, there are a few haunts i have that the sink with a big streamer would be a blast

strip the fly in. Get the entire tip out of the rod, a couple of short back casts, however you do it, and lay that line out on the water in the direction you want to cast. Quickly pick up the entire head, one back cast, double haul and shoot. You can easily shoot 70+ feet this way once you get the timing down.

Last night I ordered the 7'10" 8wt Predator and a sink tip (SA Streamer Express, 300gr, 7 ips, I think with a 26' head), both for cheap.

A 300 grain is on the heavy side for an 8 wt, but you should be fine. If it loads that rod too much, I'd go to a 250 grain. 250 seems to be a good match with most 8wts that I own.

Yeah, it said that 300gr was for 8-9wts, and i think they had 250 listed as 7-8...but they were out of it.
