Left Handed?

My Dad asked me to take him fly fishing this year. I'm excited since we haven't fished together in years. He does not owne a fly rod. My fly rods are for right handed people, he is left handed.

I'm wondering if there is a way to use the equipment I have for a lefty? Or, should I buy a reel for him. If he enjoys it I would buy him his own set up for him to use.

Any suggestions, thank you.

Most Reels can be switched for right and left hand use... What Reel do you plan on him using...

If you switch one, you also need to unwind the line and spool it in the opposite direction.

I have a LL Bean Quest II rod and reel for him to use.

If I pull all the line and backing off the reel, then just re-wind it left handed. Thanks.

there is no need to switch it... there is nothing left/right handed

    its all preference
don't bother messing with it until he gets serious

i'm "righthanded" and have reel with right and left hand retrieve...

left hand- allows me to keep my rod in my casting hand
right hand- for hard running fast fish when picking up line is needed so i want to reel with dominate hand (salt) / reels that are not reversible/ some shooting applications where i want the spindle on the right

for anything freshwater... especially pa... it really doesn't matter

put a rod and reel in his hand and ask him which way he's more comfortable.
i cast righthanded 99% of the time and still reel in with my right hand. tried changing and couldn't get used to it.

Yes, a lot of reels can be switched.

I'm with KJH. If he's starting out and hasn't gotten used to anything yet it might not matter. Assuming that he's handing the line while fighting the fish then reeling up the slack should be pretty simple with either hand. He'd still be able to cast and hold with whichever hand. Just switch hands to reel when he can. I'd wait til he gets into it more to spend any money, but that's your call.

Best of luck on your trips.

    I'd rather be fishin...

I am ambidextrous as heck, meaning I don't excel at anything with either hand, but I generally cast with my left. I switch hands when I get a fish, and fight it with my right, and reel with my left. Backwards as F, but, it works for me. I don't exactly fish for tarpon though, so it doesn't really matter.
