I got a 45.4lb blue cat from a local paylake.  I'll have to find the pic and post it.

I plan on spending a little time in the boat this year, anchored up on the Ohio, leading creek chubs and blugill to their demise.  Of course I planned on it last year and never got around to it.

i live in erie and mainly fish the shoreline for them.  Ive had really good intentions on fishing some of the inland lakes, but never got to them. last year was the first time i targeted them.  i was wondering if anyone knew about what time of year they started biting. late may, early june? any help would be great.

I fish NY around Roch and they start real good mid April in the Genny and around the start of May in the canal. No 40 lb monsters but tons of 8-10 lbs.

Saltydog- Just wondering about the shoreline cat fishing.  Never fished expressly for cats, but I've been thinking about trying it.  Some questions, if you don't mind:
    • Can I assume you are fishing at night?
    • Do you fish off the mouths of tribs, or pretty much anywhere?
    • Do you look for certain structures when locating a spot?

    jim,

yeah, we fish mostly at night time.  i have never looked for any structure, just cast out there and hoped for the best.  some nights would be boring, some nights would be on fire.  i think anywhere along the shore is good. the best spot we have found is a mile plus away from any major creek mouth.  in my limited expierence, i would say it doesnt matter where you go.

without giving up my favorite spots, both.  it was  a rare occassion when we ran into another cat fisherman.  in fact, out of the two dozen or so odd times last year, i only remember  a handfull of times seeing anybody.  we saw more steelheaders last fall that thought we were crazy and that we would never catch a catfish off shore.  little did they know.  i still dont know what time of the year they start up.  for all i know it could be right now.

When I lived along the lakeshore in NY, we would target cats during the time of the full-moon, using shrimp as bait.  We would buy the shrimp from the store, and put them in a plastic bag to soak in the sun.  The shrimp should be of the shelled variety.  The best hours were between 10 pm and 2 am.  I was lucky enough to catch a blue on a piece of liver my dad suggested I try.  First cast....BAM!  Beer and Catfishin' - those were the days of my youth!

Not even 10 minutes from Dunlap Lake. They put in Blues, Flats and Channels.  Also Carp and some nice Trout.

Buying 3 pieces of shrimp was not all the expensive.  Cut in 1/2, those pieces could be used by 6 people.  Additionally, it was a rare occurance when a piece of shrimp was lost or eaten.  Hence, the potential was there to use the shrimp more than one fishing evening.  How about that smart guy?  Obviously, I got all the brains in the family....

How is your "Uppyours Outdoor Adventures" sham working out lately?  all the negative publicity hurtin ya yet?

Took her out and got her some "fresh from the elk" poo.

I've seen your pictures, and you in person, Doc.  You make it sound as if you're Skip's age or something.  Then again, if you were that old, you'd have been using Triops for bait.

    Where's she from?

Try Pymatuning for the cats.  There are a few oddball flatheads in there that were mistakenly stocked from Mosquito.  There are also a TON of channel cats.  Every year we catch a few in the 8 to 12# range mistakenly while walleye fishing.  Got 2 last week on last ice on tip ups, one was 6# the other 9.
