October 2012

My father and I are going to head up to fish Burt and Oak next year the week of Oct 27-Nov 2nd.  We fly fish PA tribs a lot.  This will be our first trip to NY.  Will that time of the year be decent to get into a variety from Kings, Browns and steel ?  We mainly fly fish.  What type of flies do the Kings and Cohos take ?  Same flies as steel and browns like egg patterns etc ?  What size leaders do you pros recommend ?  I will be taking my spinning gear along also.  What type of go to baits work for the area ?  What lb test should I be equipped with ?  Sounds like the lighthouse is the place to stay.  I really appreciate everyone's help and opinions !  Thanks !

you will catch them on the same stuff as steelhead and browns. Just go heavy with a leader I wouldnt go any lighter than 12 lb leader but that is me, I like to reel in the fish and not break every king off. For kings i use 17 lb on my 9/10 wt fly rod and reel and I can really lean into the fish. Literally anything works egg sack, beads, nymphs, wooly buggers, streamers. Just read the special lake ontario regulations so you dont get a ticket  with multiple hook points, hook gap, leader lenght  night fishing etc.

That is not a bad week for a bit of everything. There will still be many decent kings, along with some old ones, and probably some fresh trout each day. The cohos are kinda crazy up there, in my experience there is sort of 2 seperate runs of them, one early and one late. So they are the wild card. That being said, I caught coho each of the 4 times I was up that way this year.

yeah them dates are perfect for catching everything. As for catching cohos, I wouldnt taget them to strictly catch them and nothing else because you might be disapointed. They do come in with the other fish but not in huge numbers. I catch them while trout fishing now and then but not like the salmon river. They had a HUGE push of coho this year. But along with the good amounts of fish at that time of year come mobs of people. It also cost 2 dollars per person to fish too i forgot my cash last weekend.
