Fall 2011 archery wrap-up

With this year's fall archery season coming to a close, I wanted to start the summary thread to see how everyone's season went.  I have not had a chance to tally up the numbers yet, so I will post mine later.  I have a feeling I did a little better than the 0.3 deer per hour from last year, but not by much.

-WMU
-days hunted / sits
-total hours in stand
-deer seen: bucks / does / legal bucks
-deer harvested

    2 BUCKS. 19 DEER TOTAL
    1 HARVEST:15 inch 7 point evening of Oct.28

    No acorns in the woods like last year. Have some pretty decent bucks on cam from both Pa and Ohio but ever saw them. Hard to pass up a 7 yard broad side shot. Grunted him in after he made a scrape at about 40 yards. Seeing alot of movement in ohio but hardly any bucks yet. The does are everywhere.

    As far as things go for New York, i have hunted all but 4 days since October 14th. I have seen a total of 12 deer, passed a little 4 point and no availible shots at multiple does and 2 nice 8 pts. Archery season ends Friday, but rifle season starts on Saturday. Hopefully I can fill a bow tag before Saturday! Congrats to all who shot deer, another great PA season in the books!

    I hunted one ground blind since Oct 22 till the end Nov 12 I'm guessing about 30 sits average 3 hrs each sit. 8 bucks seen from the blind,only 2 legal a small 8 about 14 -15 inches and yes a 5 pt,three up on one side and no brows.Several does and fawn 30 plus some as close as 3 yards away.No shots where taken at bucks I did shot a mature adult doe on 11-8-11 at 20 yards with a three bladed RAGE,heart shot two small hops and down maybe 20 yards and down. Do to herinated discs,I really was not mobile and could not hunt like I wanted to,this was the first year I did not climb a tree. The winds where not as good this year,I had alot S and SW winds.Some days when the wind was wrong no deer where seen but when they where right sightings where good.My best day was the last morning a hot doe started the morning,then the 5Pt,then her two fawns,then 1 hour later 6Pt still following the hot doe,then 1 hour later the 8 pt. The afternoon hunt sucked one fawn doe and that a rap 2011 early archery season closes.

    You forgot to turn your sarcasm font on.

    From the results posted, here are are the results:

    -- person that post number of sits vs. number of deer averaged 0.9 deer per sit;

    -- person that had 30 sits that totaled 90 hours averaged seeing 1 deer every 2.4 hours;

    -- person that saw 15 deer in 40 hours averaged seeing a deer every 2.6 hours;

    -- person that listed the bucks only that they saw averaged seeing a buck 8.8 hours and a legal buck every 26.6 hours;

    -- person that saw 18 deer in 40 hours averaged seeing one every 2.2 hours.

    While that isn't "no deer," that isn't great either with an approximate average of 2.5 hours to see a single deer. (Steelie had ot go and skew the average - LOL)  I am confident that there are some (especially those that will bash this post) that had a far better average than what has been posted thus far, just as there are some (who probably won't post) that had a far worse average.

    Congrats to all of those harvested.  A good job done indeed.

    WMU 2B

    Sits: 24
    Hours: 78
    Seen: 2 bucks, 89 does, 1 legal
    Harvested: 1 doe

    WMU 2A

    Sits: 6
    Hours: 32
    Seen: 9 bucks, 14 does, 5 legal (last day accounted for most sightings)
    Harvested:  8 point

    General observations: In the SRA, it is all about access.  Numbers remain strong where access is limited.  In areas with easier access, deer numbers are much lower.  Probably lower than the need to be.

    In 2A, deer numbers continue to decrease overall, despite the claim of herd stabilization by the PGC.  I look for a jump in antlered harvest because of the lowered AR, but antlered harvest will continue to decline after that as it has for several years now. The spilt season and lowered AR will put tremendous pressure on the antlered deer this fall. Doe season will be interesting with the split but another allocation increase to offset it.

    Hunted GreeneCo a few times.  Missed the biggest buck of my life, hit a limb, did not see it due to the way the sun was shining.  Spent the last 5 days in Ohio, saw some real nice bucks, none in range however.  Closest was about 50 yards, 140 or so inch 10 point.  Kinda glad he didn't respond to my grunt, I had completely lost my composure, first time that has happened in a really long time.  Didnt hunt WV this year.  Ive been really busy this year.  Cant wait to go squirell hunting next weekend, nice, low pressure hunting!

    Didn't keep a good account of sits/deer seen but my season was slow, esp. in the beginning, compared to seasons past. Started off REALLY slow and even getting blanked a couple sits early in the year.

    I did end up seeing over a dozen different bucks b/w 3 different areas with at least 6 of those being "legal" deer but nothing I would really consider a "shooter." A couple days I saw over 12 deer, some, none. It did pick up the last week of October and the first week of Nov.

    My biggest problem in my old honey hole was the encroachment of other hunters onto land they didn't have permission to be on. If myself and the other gentleman that has permission to hunt this property can't convince the owner to let us post and patrol it, then I'll just have to learn to deal with it and find some more promising spots. Getting tougher in that area due to the increase in development as well.

    I'll be in the wilds of Warren Co. for the rifle opening. My cousin has gotten several 7's, 8's and 9's on camera the past couple weeks. Should be a fun hunt if the weather cooperates.

    2B
    ~120 hours on stand
    10 bucks (4 legal) / 25AL
    harvested a small 8pt in the last hour of the season

    That comes out to be roughly .29 deer per hour on stand.  If it weren't for the last 2 days of the season, my sightings would have been about a third of what they ended up being.

    Was a tough year for me and I will admit I shot a buck that I wouldn't have likely taken in other years.  Circumstances and frustration got the best of me and I dropped the hammer on a youngin.  Absolutely no regrets though, as I am looking forward to some backstraps this week.

    Hey Dar- wasnt being sarcastic at all- if ya hunt Maine , New Hampshire, Vermont or Ct and in parts of NY the numbers mentioned here arent really all that bad.
    Kinda nice to see that most of the regular reporters here have done well too. Speaks highly of their skills and general outdoor  observations all round.
    All that said -when I was a young guy in my teens through early 30s it was commonplace to see 12 to 20 or so  a day (mostly flatheads) up in Warren Cty PA- I know that has changed and understand whats up but frankly when comparing- the bottom hasnt completely fallen out---yet.
    Would readily agree that going from what I saw as a young guy to what you guys see today could be very distressing and can understand the 'issues' presented cause of that. You are , however, within the scope of normalcy in many places-- not what it was - but not devoid of game either.
    I recall when Vermont was -the place to go - now------am up there a lot visiting one of my sons- Deer are not readily seen, they are around - but not like it was. Their issues were different -didnt have the ' ALT STUFF'. . Looks  to me like the whole place just grew into more mature woods.
         Last time I was out that PA way I saw lotsa woods that used to be farm fields- -that stuff takes it toll.

    OK, finally got mine added up.

      -3A mostly with a few sits on public land in 1B
      -21 sits over 13 days
      -68 hours on stand
      -27 total deer, ~0.4 per hour
          -20 does and 7 bucks of which 3 were legal
      -harvested 1 doe on opening day and buck on 11/10, both in 3A
      -arrows shot 4, missed biggest buck of my life on 11/1 and first shot on 8pt

    Overall it was a good season even though a lot of my sits were cut short due to back problems and missed a couple full days.  Passed on an easy turkey shot that I regret.  Saw 8 bears one of which tried to climb in stand with me.

    Well for me I Hunted all but 4 days. Some only being afternoon hunts. Hours not really sure,4 times seen no deer.Seen a ton of doe and for some odd reason most mature and not many fawns,which I found a bit strange. On buck sightings pretty much the same as every other year which would be a lot of scrubs,legal and 7-8 monsters. Only one monster giving up a shot that I missed, hitting my sleeve with the string. Just like every year there is meat in the freezer. All In All NOT the best archery season but not the worst either. DAVE

    I would agree that those are good numbers for Maine, NH, VT, and CT, but PA isn't one of those states -- yet.

    Nice job on the DEER PER HOUR, When you brake it down 1 deer in 2.5 hours kind of sucks. Did you do the math on your pheasant hunt? I bet you flush more birds per hour than we all see deer. I think rabbit hunting was slow but I bet if I had a couple of good beagles I could get more than one jump per 2.5 hours.

    This was a slow pheasant season for us.  Normally we average about 4-8 points per hour on public ground.  This year was probably about half of that or less.

    I hunted about 105 hours and saw 35 or so deer. A little better than average. One area had the acorns and the deer came from all directions. While SE/SW wind can be challenging, it was consistent which made seeing deer possible. I thought it was a nice season. It was enjoyable until the last day when I got food poisoning. All hunts in WMU 4D on state forest.

    I can guarantee that there are many slashings in 2f where you can jump more snowshoe hare than deer in a day.

    You saw 49 deer in 2F?!?! I have a camp there and hunt there every year on the first day of gun season. we're lucky if everybody in camp combined sees about 25 deer! (about 15 guys) The Marienville area is horrible. The game commission needs to work something out.

    Steelie, myself and 3 other guys hunted 2f for 1 full day(Nov. 7th). While hunting we saw 4 diff bucks,6 doe, 1 turkey,1 bear,2 grouse, and a woodcock. While driving we saw 2 bucks and 2 doe. Pretty good sightings considering we didn't have time to scout. 2f has good hunting you just need to find where the animals are. I hunted near a game lands in Tidioute.

    I used to hunt the Marienville area. The decline in the number of deer there is the most dramatic I have seen anywhere. Literally went from seeing 20-25 deer the first day of deer season to 1-2 in a couple of years! There has been a decline in many areas in North West/Central PA, but that was a crazy, quick decline there.
