Most of the shanties I've seen were in the middle of the lake. Unless you live on the lake (or know someone who does) it's tough to fish most of the lake. Unless of course you've got an ATV to make  travel easier. I doubt I'll put much time into 'toga this year.

yeah we usually use snowmobiles to get around, so i guess what I need is the best place to pull on and if there's a good fishing hole anywhere particular

    I'd rather be fishing

Lots of them come on at the north end off of fitch road. South shore marina is going to keep the parking lot open this year to.

Yes, i need to know also where to park the snowmobile trailer and get the sleds on the lake. I have heard that they are giving tickets to anyone that launches/loads up their sled/quad at the state launch. Where is south shore marina? And do they care if we park our sled and trailer there?

They are on the south end on the east corner. They will have a honor system for paying to park, or 50.00 for the season.

hia cooldude, Question for all, I was looking into maybe getting a portable one or two man shanty. Just for starters I'm 47 and been fishing new york ever since I was able to drive. Mostly fishing portions of southern ny and northern nj year round. I know upstate, you people shanty more  given the sub temp extremes. On another note, down here icefishing is relatively milder compared to up north. My plan is to make serveral trips (godwillingly) up there I was wondering about investing in a  portable shanty. Been looking around the internet but not sure yet if anything new is out in the field as for portable shanty and wondering if you or the others know of any worth looking at. oh, one more question, how thick is the ice you guys?  Tuna guide dude..how much for shanty outting :) thanks in advance

you missed out on the shanty deal bro
Gander had the 2 man Clam 2000 on sale turkey weekend for a buck fifty
it will be hard to find a shelter as good and cheap now the hard water is upon us

i would suggest the above portable for yourself (easy set up,light and cozy)
avoid the cheap tent shelters (imo) if you want it to last

    as for ice:
3-4" on smaller lakes & ponds below Albany with big lakes not yet locked up

more up north on small water, ADK Lake had good 5+" and today i heard Lake Pleasent had 5" , which is a big lake

Saratoga area is about the same
search out and stick with the small lakes for another 2 weeks......

Drop me a line - eagleed@nycap.rr.com if you come up this way or just to get updated on lakes and conditions.  I'm retired and go out regularly to check Lake Lonely, Saratoga Lake, Moreau Lake and the bay of the Hudson River @ Spiers Falls State Boat Launch (great for large pike).  Also, I'm only 1/2 hr from Lake George, but don't fish it much as the wind up there is wicked.

Will do ed thanks for sharing,I will try to post days in advance before heading up the thurway. I do know gasoline is making it a concern for everyone .. really too expensive when you think about it for those day trips. But I have a friend who enjoys icefishing so we can split the expense for a weekender. Still waiting to go do first PB blackfish or seabass/ling whatever is out there down off manasquan nj. only hr away , Now that is real table fish!

you'd be hard pressed to find me driving a great distance to fish Saratoga Lake (i'm less than 1 hr away)
better bet is to keep going until you reach the King
    but that's up to you

Tuna, I just want some good jumbo perch action and if harriman state park were to freeze,I am only 20 minutes tops from those spring fed ponds. But the better water in that park  hasn't been open for icefishing in over 4 seasons now. phoned my friend down the shore, said seabass are done, only thing going are them hit or miss tog and the limit is 8 and they have to be 15"or better. I am trying to get down soon weather permitting. If you can let me know of good reports up there, much  appreciated

    Tuna:

What do you mean by the "King"?  Or are you referring to the Salmon River for steelheads??

Lake George ( The King) is a far better fishery for perch and trout with a possible 10#+ Laker
if walleye is the target than i'd suggest , as i did , Goodyear Lake
Knott's motel is a great cheap place right on the lake to stay

tuna, I like the clear cold water transparency in lk.george, remember the 90hp prop wash off my friends 17'proline some tens years ago trolling up 8" landlock stockies ..looking at google street map, what is the location on the lk. and road to this shore motel ? I'm guessing but, wouldn't setting tipups on the shallower ends of this lake be the hotspots? Do you set up over the deeper main body  when  frozen over? I wouldn't mind fishing lk.george at all provided a guide to where and how to icefish that water. I use to fish greenwood lk. in my early 20s for years and we always fished shallower channels in the shallower coves or jersey side around an island that part of the lake 14ft or less. We caught all the species including trout. Haven't bothered there in over ten years cause the fish always tasted like the mud seaweed in that septic homes all along every inch of shoreline motoboat lake. The way I go it these days, I aim for mainly clean spring fed lakes.  Tuna, what about shuyler lake or  Ostego? want to try them this year , would you all want to meet on some state top hardwater? heard motels not expensive along the lakes too.
