Panfish Lures ??

With the colder weather of the last weeks. I've been thinking about ice fishing.

What is your go-to lure and bait for first ice?
If you only had one lure/bait what would it be for what fish?

Hali(small perch/color) with 2or3 maggots- Bluegill

You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

I usually don't fish the first ice much. I wait for the perch bite on the bay to pick up a bit.

At which point I use a northland mimic minnow with a shiner on it. If you keep it moving it just kills the perch. I've also catch steel with it regularly. Works well on bass and northerns as well.

Some of my fav's mentioned already, but if I had to go with 1 jig under the ice it would be a Fiskas Wolfram.
    Probably a GB82 in 4mm.
Tipped with a fathead or a couple mags depending on the targeted species.
The tungsten's expensive, but worth it in my experience unless you're fishing brush (snags).

Also like the pro-scandinavia pimples & trebles over halis....perch KILL them.

1/16 oz northland tackle forage minnow spoon with maggots or a waxie is my go to lure. Some days a minnow head. Catch alot of crappies on these spoons and perch too. I like the gill pills also.

This is interesting. Of all the lures and baits mentioned above no one said plastics for their go to bait. Does that tell you something?

Man chaunc, between those vid's & the snow outside, now I'm really ready to go!

Chuckles - I started using plastics a couple years ago.
But you asked for 'go to' so that's why I didn't mention them in my reply.
If I have to pick one jig it'd be a tungten/live bait. Luckily we aren't limited to just one.
I like the ones Bogey mention, along with the ratsos...
also found what are called 'whips' last year...like them for quick color changes.
The action of the newer plastics, even when cold, is the key. They're 'jiggly'.

    Pork...A few questions about plastics.

Have you tried/used the sented plastics and do they work better?
I fish for Gills so would I want to go with the smaller size?
Whips that I've seen are 1 3/4" long. Don't you get a lot of short hits? (just grabbing the plastic?)
    Thanks...

If your plastics are to long, just trim them down,I like them 3/4 - 1 inch long,Those squishy ball toys that have all the spikes on them make some great lures.
