The Rut

I've not been hunting much due to a bad back, but the deer around here seem to have forgot about the rut! I've been out 4 times since Oct 22 and have not seen a buck rub or a scrape in the area I'm hunting, but have seen several does.Last night after the hunt I drove 200 yards from my house and see 4 8 pts bedded down in a green field not 50 yards from the road, drive another 100 yards and see 22 does and 4 more buck feeding as buddies(no fighting). Any other having the same kind of hunting as me or am I just snake bitten this year. I know it's going to get better BUT.

Same for me.  Few rubs and no buck sightings.  Yesterday, two big scrapes opened up in an area I have been hunting.  I know the bucks are there, just little day time movement.

This weekend should see a significant increase in daytime movement.  I hope.

Saw 6 different bucks last night and they were all chasing doe.  2 of those buck were chasing at 4:00 in the afternoon, as soon as I climbed in.  Lot's of grunting and clod-hopping portrayed by the bucks.
A 2-yr old 9pt bristled up and was aggressively posturing to run off a 1.5yr old 4 pt.
    No "mature" bucks were seen.
    It's starting here...

Well glad to here others are having simular hunts and luck as me (not really) but now I don't feel alone.I just got back from a big morning scout,I found no scrapes and only one small rub.30 yards away a very very small 6 pt stands up out of it's bed then a big doe and fawn pop up the buck showed no interst in the doe.The doe was bigger than the buck body wise, all deer just started feeding and milled away after 15 minutes. To Ironhead you see bucks chasing in July ,HaHa. Glad your having luck.

Up until yesterday I had seen a total of four bucks. Yesterday morning it was 31 degrees with no wind. I saw four bucks close enough to shoot and 3 were looking. All scrubs but I agree it's starting. I also found 4 scrapes that were made the night before. Warmer last night and today with no action to speak of.

Talked with my cuz, he is several miles down the road from S-10 and he said its started up his way too; it's on like donkey kong! Lots of grunting, chasing, snort wheezing...lots of bucks sighted but nothing worthy of an arrow yet.

He even had a run in with some bears on Sat. A cub was chewing on his plastic fender of his ATV. He almost walked b/w momma and her 3 cubs, in the dark...

Seen a group of 8 doe all by themselves, a group of 10 doe all by themselves, a 6 point grazing by himself, and a nice big 8 far off just grazing in the field by himself tonight. No rut happening here yet, haven't seen any scrapes or rubs although I did see a spike and a 4 point clinging antlers.....well trying too.

The yotes may be the problem 15 -20 min before daylight they light up the woods then 15- 20 min after dark they go nuts again.

No bucks chasing yet in Somerset County, but the bucks are separated.  Hopefully they will start chasing this week here.

I hunted friday afternoon the 28th over a fresh scrape at an intersection of two trails... had the boots smelling of EverCalm and Estrous Buck Bomb walking in. Dribbled a little Active Scrape in the dirt and a little on the licking branch. Was set up by noon to stay til dark. Everything seemed perfect. Sprayed a burst of estrous every few hours, grunted a few times. Debated on rattling but I knocked em together a few times about 5:30 trying to make something happen.

    Nothing.

Saw one buck driving home standing next to the road, didnt see any does ahead of him but there could have been.
This is my weekend to go all in though. I have all friday and all saturday to hunt my best property, aka my old farm.
I have trail cam pics of a fantastic 8, but I wont hesitate to deflate anything legal.

Hope they are chasing, Im struggling to even see deer lately.

Most of the deer around here seemed to have changed patterns completely. The goofy eared doe and her fawns are not showing up until about 8:30pm. Another group is in the backyard about 10pm all of them well after dark. A couple still coming to the neighbor's apple tree daily at 6pm though.
May have to try to figure out how to get one of them ???

Nothing at all in the mornings that I have been out.

No scrapes, no rubs showing up yet either ???

Not much time left for me with my work schedule.

Drove by a deer farm a hour or so ago.  The does were up and the bucks, which were in the same enclosure, were lying down chewing cud, mostly together.  They were showing no interest in the does at all and didn't seem to be bothered by each other either.

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Couple days late, but I second, or third the coyotes disturbing them.  My spots in Butler, Beaver, and even Allegheny all are pretty much worthless after we see or hear coyotes.  Three evenings  in a row during September scouting I watched a large group of bucks high tail it out of the field as soon as the coyotes started howling.  The first three days of archery season the same thing happened.  Luckily the buck I shot came out earlier than the coyotes. :)

Also, I saw one of the biggest bucks of the year this morning while going to work running two doe in the front yard of a house in economy.  I thought he was going to chase the does in front of me so I came to a stop and watched for a minute or so.  That's the first one I've seen chasing hard so far this year.  Good luck to you guys the next couple weeks.

Finally had the right wind last evening to hunt the monster buck tree stand. less than hour in stand see a two deer out in a field. 10 minutes later here comes a big doe walks in behind me hmmm there was two deer, look a down the trail a bit farther the second was a nice 8 point. Waited till he got some cover between us I stand up turn around trailing the doe he has no Idea I'm there and drawing back he stops broadside at 18 yards. I let it fly caught the string on mine sleeve and the arrow drops after 10 yards AAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH He kinda flinched and down the trail he goes head down and on the doe trail. On a good note seen scraps and rubs all around that area. Dave P.S.DIDN'T have my phone to take a pic and post it while in my stand LOLOLOLOL
