Line connection
I was just wondering what everyone uses to connect fly line to their leader? Also would those connectors that you melt down be good to use for steelhead?

some of my trout lines i use the loops because i fish so many different waters. that way i'm able to switch different lengths and x's of tapered leaders faster.

If the line comes with a loop, I use that.
If not, I'll nail knot a short piece of 20# Amnesia to it, with a perfection loop tied in it.

Yep, same way I do it. I of course nail knot my loop onto the fly line.

Add my vote to this one. My SA line did come with a loop, but I beat so much water that a crack formed about an inch away from the loop. Now its a short piece of charteuse mono nail knotted to the line and a loop to loop connection from there. I fish alot of furled leaders and the way I make them ends in a loop, so it just makes sense to have a loop to loop connection.

Always felt the loop would feed back through the eyes better if you have to bring your leader in that far and the fish takes off.
I serve a small loop onto the end of my flyline with tying thread. One drop of Sally hansons and good to go, never had one fail. Colored thread can give you a built in indicator.
I like that amnesia idea though might have to give that a try.

no.... thats from the 24pk of water gremlins you clamp on the butt section of your leader the amnesia (heavy mono) nail knotted with an perfection loop works well I also use the braided loops, secured with 2 nail knots and then coat the entire thing with aquaseal if you want to do some work... you can weld your own loops with a heat gun

Here's a suggestion that goes back 30 years or more. I bought a dozen of these in the late 1970's and I'm still using this stock to this day. The name of the product is "Leader Link." Apparently, it's still being made by Wright McGill, but there's little evidence on the Web.

These are great. Hard to find though. I have an orange one on now, that's been on for two years. Think I got them from Cabela's. I even cut the loop off my line to put one on because I didn't like the way the loop casted or floated. Another knot I've used is the Castwell Knot. Very simple. And takes less than 2 seconds to attach. It's so simple you'll swear it can't work, but I tried to pull it out of 20 pound test loop and couldn't do it. I make my own furled leaders, around 50" long. i attach these to the fly line with a nail knot. I attach a very small Blackbird swivel that I get from FishUsa, then tie my tippet to the swivel. I often attach a short piece of Amnesia to the swivel, then loop to loop for the tippet. . This is for steelhead. For stocked trout, my furled leader is made from Uni-thread, very soft and pliable. I attach a 3X piece of tippet to the furled leader loop to loop, then taper down using double surgeon's knots.

the castwell knot is type of sheet bend knot. as 5milepete said, it looks too simple to work, but it does, very well at that.

I just got back from a week of fishing in NY.Too many salmon on to count and the castwell knot held as I never changed my leader the entire week.

You should seal the end of the fly line if you cut the tip. Otherwise, water will get in between the coating and core, causing the tip to sink.
