dropper

I am new to fly fishing for steelhead and was wondering if anyone uses droppers and if so what two flies have worked the best. I know things change day to day depending on th stream conditions but what flies are you guys confident with?

I would experiment with what has worked for you if you've caught steelies on a fly rod before. Guys like to use an assortment of combinations. For example try using an egg pattern as your lead fly with a black stonefly nymph dropper. You can try a streamer as your dropper as well. I like throwing an olive bugger on the bottom at times. Like i said play around with different combos. Most of everything will probably work. Just remember that using two fly means losing two flies. Good luck.

How true...I mainly use a single now but if you tie your flies this may not be an issue.
I almost always start with an egg pattern and caddis dropper. But don,t stick with it if there are no lookers.
Thats when I swing wollies or a stone.

I usually use a dropper when water is low and clear. Usually use some type of egg fly, glowbug or suckerspawn, small, with a nymph dropper, occasionally a small streamer dropper, like am emerald shiner fly.
Nymphs are usually a stone fly, prince, or caddis. Nagy's book explains how to fish it and rig it. Not sure why it works, but I've found that even when the steelhead are hitting only the egg fly, if I take the dropper off, they quit hitting. Also, the egg fly serves as an indicator, so you can check your drift, since I rarely use one.
