Oak Orchard Salmon Run

Any thoughts on the last week of september for a salmon trip. We will be fly fishing from the sycamore hole down. Just worried we are a little early for salmon. Earliest i have fished is the second week of oct. and it was loaded. Reports i have read so far suggest the salmon are at the mouths now. Just looking for some feedback. Thanks!

fish are staged up in front of all the streams and rivers. the last week of september might be alittle early but if you go and there isnt fish head east to the salmon river. My brother inlaw and I went last weekend and caught a bunch.

Thanks! We will keep the salmon river in mind. Also, if it is a bust we may head to Erie for some fall steelie action! I think we could find salmon at the oak if it gets colder before then lowering the temp of the river.

well its 50 degrees and rained last night you might be in luck if it stays cool. I woke up at 445 am this morning and it was freezing outside and raining and I almost went fishing but because of my crazy work schedual I dont know when Im going into work or coming home so i could end up working untill 2 am so I figured id sleep in, maybe tomorrow but definetly saturday im bringing my boat so if there isnt much action  ill just launch the boat and catch them out in the lake

Good to hear about the cold and rain! Hope you slam em. I know all about messed up work schedules. It makes fishing rough, especially when u are 6.5 hrs. away. I often drive to erie to fish 1 day and drive back. I'm like the salmon- nothing can keep me from fishing when its time to go!

JUST RETURNED FROM THE OAK! SALMON ARE PRESENT IN GOOD NUMBERS, BUT WORK ON THE LEVY AT WATERPORT DAM KEEPS THE WATER MUDDY. THE MAIN CHANNEL SHOULD BE OPEN ACCORDING TO THE DAM MANAGER ON OCT. 1ST. THE MOUTH OF THE LAKE IS LOADED WITH SALMON WAITING TO RUN. WHEN THEY COME-LOOK OUT!!!!!! BURT DAM LITERALLY HAD NO FISH IN THE AREAS BELOW THE DAM. VERY FEW FISH AT THE DAM(WHICH WAS BEING HEAVILY FISHED). VERY LITTLE FLOW THERE ALSO. FULL OF MUCK AND DEBRIS!

Are there salmon in the stream or just in the lower section at the lake?

Salmon are in the stream at oak orchard! Not in giant numbers yet, but certainly enough to go around. Many more are waiting to start up the stream at the mouth.

We all caught salmon, but only early in the morning and just before dark due to the water clarity. Landed an 18# atlantic which was the highlight for me. The dam work should be done by the 12th and flow should be returned to the main channel. I think you should slam em by then! Wish i could go again myself. Won't be returning until last week in oct for trout. Good luck!

i will keep you posted. I try to get up from erie, where i live, up to the oak at least once a week. when you say water clarity, was it muddy due to the work on the dam?? also where you using flies or egg sacs?

Water clarity was due to removing the levy at the dam. Very muddy most of the day. I stuck with flies the whole trip. The work on the dam was supposed to be done on the 1st of oct. However, they now say the 5th. All the fish were in the overflow section down to the sycamore hole and at the archery club. The main channel should be returned with flow soon. Orleans outdoors website keeps me posted on the dam work if u are interested.

Quick question....Where exactly is the sycamore hole? Ive fished that whole stream several times and I know the archery club, ive just heard the sycamore hole referenced a lot and never figured out where exactly it is lol

The sycamore hole is where the two channels come together to form one. At least thats what i've always thought it to be. Anyone else have any ideas?

correct superstone. head up from the archers pool. the "hole" starts about 25 yrds from where the two channels meet. I like to cross at the end of the foot path on the right as you walk up stream. you seem to get a longer drift from the left hand side of the stream if you are facing up stream. the sycamore seems to hold more browns then the archer for some reason

superstone. was very shocked that we had no issues with the water. fished from sun up to sun down. a few browns and steelhead caught. biggest problem was the guys foul hooking the salmon and chasing them every where. going up again this tuesday

@edporanski- thanks for the info. Sounds like u hit it just right. Glad u had a successful trip. Snaggers will always be an issue running around yelling fish on good hook when its in the dorsal. Kind of funny thing to watch though! Heading back up soon myself.
