Egg colors 4 Steelhead

It's about that time to start filling the egg box for the upcoming steelhead run. This year I want to really put together an organized egg box with different size and colors. What should my box contain. Last year I went from size 16-10 in cheese, pink and yellow.

I have tied white with a yellow dot which works very well on stock trout but never considered black.  Was thinking of doing up a few blue based on what I have read about that color being bit a lot during tests.

dimebrite might be a bit nutty, but he's right on the money with this one.

For me, the bLU poWrbAyt fLeE is best fished in the early morning, before the sun hits the water. It's the fly I tie on at the car, and I fish it in the pre-dawn grayness. Once the sun's up, I go to the more typical pinks, oranges, chartreuses, and creams.

Whether it's the dim-lighting at this time, or the color itself, I've always done better with these fished 2-3 sizes bigger than typical. If the water is low & clear and you're thinking #16 eggs for the day, I'll use a blue egg in the early morning like that in a #12. If the water has any color to it at all, I'll go even bigger.

Last year, one morning after some overnight rain, I did well with this egg in a #10, tied big and sparse. About the size of a nickel. Ugly looking fly but I hooked 3-4 and landed one before the sun came out. Which, for me, is pretty good.

I tie mine with a light blue material. Actually got it when an old girlfriend's family was having a garage sale. Her mom had a bunch of gift-wrapping stuff, and she had this soft rope for tying up gifts that was basically identical to glo-bug yarn. Got a half dozen cards of it in blue, yellow and pink, totally free.

Hey cold; i'll observe the compliment over the rib jab

Hey; tie some blue bodied nymphs with red or pink shucks beards and tails as well... also estaz fly with pink or red tail... or even pulled over the back... maybe hivis; z-lon or yarn as the back or tail... even blue bodied buggers with a red maribou tail and hackled with red... deadly; I agree with cold on the early morning thing as well... blue / red ; blue/pink; blue/orange are all staple color combinations... good luck...

I have never fished eggs down to size 16. I tie some small eggs but still put them on a 12 hook scud hook.

I am a pretty big fan of solid red eggs myself (I think they yarn is called Roe or Flame red). I don't even tie them with a dot usually but I have made some half and half cheese/red combos before and they did well.

I believe I read something someplace that the color blue is the color that the fish see the longest in their color spectrum. Not sure where I read it but I do believe it was an article specifically on steelhead.

Blue is the most stimulating to the eye's rods (at least in humans), which are used for contrast of dim light conditions. Every species has a different amount of rods and cones though.

Lime green/chartruse has worked for me as well. I've caught stockies on black, but never steel. I carry all colors with me, red, oranges, yellows, pinks, greens, light blue, purple, lavander, white. I think thats it. haha. if you get white egg yarn, you can dye it with Rit dye to make you own custom shades. Shades will vary based on how long you soak them. Pat yarn dry with a paper towel and place on a cookie sheet, place in oven on 200 for an hours or so and you're ready to tie.
I also make cheater eggs when I'm in a hurry. I sometimes buy the white 5mm pom poms at any craft store and dye them as well. Place the hook through them and add a drop of super glue on the shank and you got a good looking 10 second egg. I add my "bllod dots" with a red Sharpie. It's cheating, but they work well on both steel and stockies.

Blue is the first color they see in the morning...prior to that their world is black and white...I like a light blue spawn or egg in the first light. I  also fish a black spawn from time to time...I fished with Salmo-trutta one day and it was slow going...he pulled out a black spawn and the powder keg exploded. Now I use it when things go cold just for Kharmic value. I agree with JEB...the pom-poms are soooo easy and effective that tie micro eggs is out of the question now.

    being one with the fish!
