favorite rod for panfish....

you can only choose one specifically for gills, perch and crappie.  what would it be?  (you already have rods for eyes, bass and steelhead).  i have been looking at a st. croix premier 7 ft. light action and really like it.  the reason i ask is that i get so much good info here.  (told my wife last year that i had all the rods i needed, and now i need a new noodle rod and wading rod.........she thinks i fell and hit my head.......lol).  give me good advice so i can blame it on you guys.

I have a 5' St. Croix Premier Ultra Light myself. If I were to purchase another one it would be longer rod for the sole purpose of vertical jigging over brush. I do believe they make a 7' in an Ultra Light, the Premier's from St. Croix that is.

I like an ultra light rod for panfish because you can feel the action of small jigs like Blue Fox, Road Runner, etc. much better.

ronnie, i have one, about five years old.  actually it seems a little too stiff to be classified as an ultra light.  however, the premier line was changed a couple of years ago.

I like a faster rod when I'm fishing for panfish because I'm doing a lot of tight lining. Jigging with a slow rod would be almost annoying.

I looked and they do make an UL in a 7'...PS70ULF2...classified as fast. That's the way to go right there.

I would go with the Premier, though, and not an Avid. With the ultra lights there's not going to be hardly any, if any, noticeable difference, they both weigh virtually the same. I think the only difference is the warranty...five years on the Premier and lifetime on the Avid.

agree,  i have both avids and premiers and like them equally.  i did handle a 6.6 ft, light action and it also was a joy to handle.  just a bit more stiff, but may fit the bill also.

Currently using a 6'6"ML Avid.  I've been pulling gills and crappie out of the weeds and need a bit more power.  Once the weeds are gone, I'll go to a 6'6"L Avid (until I get my 7' lite Rainshadow finished).

There seems to be a real big gap in power between the ML and L Avid.  The Rainshadow seems to fall in that gap.  Maybe the Avid L is mislabeled?

trout, are you saying that the light seems to lean towards an ultra-light?  this may be what i am looking for.   i currently have a 6.6 avid med. lt. and a 7.0 premier med. lt. in addition to a couple of 6.6 mediums and a 5.0 ultra light that seems to be more along the lines of a med. lt.  this small rod is about 5-8 years old and a bit too stiff to be called an ul.

I haven't compared it to other St. Croix lites, but it just seems way too lite to be considered lite (to me).  I built a 6'6" UL Avid for a guy last year and it felt similar to the one I have that's labeled lite.
