Do you turn any small diameter stuff? I bought a Danielsson Control (dual mode) fly reel this winter which I just had engraved by a guy in Texas (Otto Carter is his name) with a chinook salmon and an atlantic salmon fly. I have over a grand tied up in this reel (the reel is phenominal by the way) but the problem is it has a plastic knob on the handle. I'm looking to get a new knob turned for it in wood. I'm partial to birdseye maple but open to suggestions. Would you be interested in turning one for me? If so, let me know your prices and some wood suggestions (something natural, no dyed wood or laminates) and I can send you the plastic knob to copy. I build rods myself but I don't have a lathe so I need to find someone to do it and your work looks great. Let me know if you're interested in this project. I would need it by October, that's the only real catch. Thanks.

Have any of you worked with a Zpey style handle for a switch/spey build?

I met with the guys from Z-Pey two years ago and had a chance to talk with them about that handle set up.  What they did was integrate bent carbon fiber tubing that is seated in the butt section and is covered with very dense EVA foam.  As far as this catching on, I don't think it really has stateside.  Scandinavian fisherman pioneer most of the Spey stuff that we get years before, apparently Z-Pey and this other new company are coming out with handle concept designs for Spey rods.  This handle set up has intrigued me since it came out, but it has yet to capture the attention of the American market.  I asked them about possibly selling the rear handle setup for this so I could take it apart and have a look, however they were not keen on that idea.

Here is a picture that Robert Selfors from Norway posted to his Facebook, it is his new design of Spey Handle.  Something to think about.

Whether or not you will see this in your local store as opposed to a natural cork handle remains to be seen....however, it is a neat concept and one that can certainly catch on.

Also, I forgot to mention that on Z-Peys heavier line rods they actually affix a carriage that integrates into the foregrip to form the handle, I dug up a picture of it for you to see here.  The smaller rods are done with the foam and carbon fiber extension.

I have about as many rods to do as Skip.  Biggest problem I have is that I can't fire up my lathe when I'm wrapping or finishing as it throws too much dust.  Once I do turn knobs and grips, I have to let the shop settle for about a week before I can start working on rods again.

That being said, I do have 2 grips that need to be turned in a week or so.

Here's a few knobs I've done, along with a pic of my current wood inventory.

those reel handle knobs are nice.  That takes a lot of skill to turn something so small and precise. You are a professional for sure.

Received the knob from Scott today and installed it on the Danielsson. I only have one complaint, now I can't stop looking at the darn thing! This is exactly what I was looking for. Scott's services were fast, reasonably priced, and of tremendous quality. I emailed Scott some pics of the knob installed on the reel (had trouble trying to attach them here) so hopefully he will post them. Big thanks to Scott and to Skip for pointing me in his direction, they are both great craftsmen when it comes to rod (and reel knob) building!
