"Chuting"

For Parachutes - seems like everyone has there own way that their comfortable with. Here's how I like to do it - not sayin it's the right way - but it's a way that was taught to me by an old feller some time ago.......

Tied with CDC as the post:


1. Strip off a healthy clump of CDC off the stem and tie it in. Keep it back away from the eye leaving room for the thorax. Tie it in with the butts facing to the rear.





2. Trim the butt ends off on a taper and wrap to the rear and back again. Maintain the taper of the abdomen as your doing this.





3. Post the CD by pulling it up and wrapping in front. Build a dam of thread in front of the material - keeping it upright. Keep in mind not to use too many wraps which would crowd the eye.



4. Tie in the hackle. First two wraps should be right in front of the CDC and tight against it. Leave enough of the bare stem as shown away from the CDC. Then finish securing it at the rear of the CDC.



5. Dub the abdomen. Create the post by pulling up tight on the CDC and hackle all at once and take tight even wraps up the material and back down again. Now you have the CDC and the hackle sicking straight up. This is why you leave a short section of bare stem left away from the CDC when you first tied it in on step 4.



6. Tie in two strands of ostrich herl with the butts facing to the rear. Tie them in front and in back of the post - returning the thread just in front of the eye. Wrap the herl one at a time to the rear and back to the front again - tying each one off individually just behind the eye.





7. Wrap the hackle down the post in tight, even wraps. When you get the the hook shank - I like to take two wraps of thread around the post, on top of the hackle stem and tight to the body. This secures it to the post. Then bring the hackle stem to the front, pinch the post between your fingers, pull it all back which clears everything and allows you to secure the hackle to the shank just behind the eye without trapping any hackle fibers.



8. Trim off the hackle and tie off. Trim the CDC to length.
