anadromous, Thanks for the advice.  Now you have me thinking. A barrel swivel sounds good.  The only reason I would not use one is the concern that the fish may spook.  Guess I could still have 5 ft of floro off the barrel? Would that be enough not to spook the fish?

Like the previous guys stated use a barrel swivel Size. As for spooking fish a leader of 36" should be fine depending on stream depth / clearity . If it's an 8 ft deep hole I'd use an 8ft leader . 6lb fluoro (I use the same) works well for me even in low & clear conditions . I especially like a heavier base line 10lb for lake fishing . Good luck fellas.

I would ditch the Vanish, especially in cold weather, and use Maxima
UltraGreen 6# test.  I tie in a black swivel, then six feet of the Maxima.
Better abrasion resistance, knot holding, and less breakoffs.  Just my
    opinion.

I like powerpro 8lb then a small black barrel swivel then 3'-5' Seaguar Carbon Pro Fluorocarbon Fishing Line 6lb or 8lb if water is stained.
If using an indicator find one with the metal eyelet and tie the line to it then tie leader on.
If the metal is bright, dull it with a black permanent marker.

Matzuo makes 18" Fluorocarbon snelled hooks

At night in the marina or along the wall at Walnut a leader is not needed.

    jeffjava,
Basically I agree with anadromous, except I usually use a snap swivel and I tie up various weights of tippetts and just carry them around in a fly wallet.  Or, I'll just carry some spools on the creek with me.  All I do is tie a small double loop in the tippett and snap it in the snap swivel.  Simple, very simple.  And quick.

10' Rod, Straight 4lb Mccoys Mean Green line, a small float, a couple small green split shots, Size 16/18 hooks. Works for me

Honestly man, don't make it more complicated than what it actualy is.  Just run straight 4lb low-vis green trilene with a size 16 hook, small shot and a float.  The size 16 should be good enough to use with minnows and sacs, but will be small enough for singles as well (although I like 18s for singles).

10lb test is no fun to cast on a noodle as is, and will only cause problems for your son.  Adding a leader will only create more down time when he gets snagged and breaks off.

same here fishrmn, i use no leader, straight 4lb with a #16 hook. a fishing line is only as strong as its weakest knot. if i break off i just tie a new hook. ive have very little break offs on fish ever. usually the only time my line breaks is on a snag. like was said, dont make it complicated. you can use heavier line if you wish but the heavier the line, the more fish that will spook from it. anything more than 8lb is unnecesary. when i first started fishing steelies i used 8lb. test and #12 hooks. people kept telling me to use a smaller hook but i just couldnt imagine a #16-20 hook handling these strong fish. eventually i gave in and tried them. my hook up rate has increased drastically since doing so. ive really noticed that the lightest you can go without having many breakoffs will catch more fish.

W A R N I N G.......keep in mind these are only opinions. they may be dumb, smart, right, or wrong in your eyes.
