rifle hunting approaching.....

ok guys this may seem like a dumb question, but i am curious. I really got into bow hunting this year, and i got my first deer with a bow, in doing so i pretty much got addicted to the sport. Its almost tough to want to shoot another deer with anything besides a bow. But heres my question....do any of you guys take your bows into the woods with you in rifle season and try to harvest a deer with it?? I know there has to be  few guys who do it...but is it worth it??? or is it a waste??  thanks

Depends on the pressure put on the deer you hunt.

Of the 3 bucks I've shot in my hunting career during gun season, all were within bow range (30 yards & under) and moving slowly.  6 out of the 9 antlerless deer I've shot with the gun have been in archery range.  Of the 3 out of range, 2 were moving pretty good.  I've missed a few bucks & does over the years with a gun that were out of bow range and moving pretty good - dumb shots in hindsight.  Every deer I've ever killed, except for one doe, I've been on the ground.

Like SK said, a lot has to do with pressure.  If you're in an area where a lot of hunters put on drives and the deer are moving, I'd go with the gun.  If you're on low-pressure, private land and like the challenge, take your bow.  No shame in not bagging a buck every year.  I guess whether or not it's a "waste" depends on your perspective.  If you're in it more for the overall experience and challenge, and not just to say you shot a deer, I'd say it's not a waste.

I know a few guys who are pretty hardcore bow hunters and shoot only big bucks.  A few, when they're out during gun season, they're usually driving for younger hunters, but carry a flintlock just in case Mr. Big shows up.  Some don't hunt with a gun at all.

Don't let pressure or expectations from your buddies be the determining factor.  If you feel like you just have to bag a deer every year to prove something to someone, I think you're missing the point of hunting.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy bagging a deer just as much as the next guy, but if I don't, it's not the end of the world.  I'm a little bummed out at the end of the season, but life goes on, and we still eat meat the rest of the year.  As Mrs. rsquared likes to point out, with all the money I spend on gear, travel, licenses & butchering every year, we could probably eat filet mignon every night for dinner.

Definately an advantage in an urban hunting setting . I will be in my tree stand hunting close to my families houses while the rifle hunters push the deer through my funnel!!!! The pressure does matter though . Bow hunting is the ultimate .....

Ive hunted the regular season with my flintlock before but never my bow.  Humm, is a crossbow legal arms everywhere during firearm season? If so that would be a nice way to ease into it.

The bow had its chance but it didn't produce, so the 243, 270, or 30-06, whichever i chose, is comin out for at least a doe and if any legal buck pops up.

If you do carry your bow remember. Don't shoot at running or walking deer with your bow. Grunt, blat, whistle to get the deer to stop for a shot. Shooting at moving targets with a bow is a tough call...

I think as long as it's not freezing, I'll be toting my bow with me opening day just so I can get close to the houses.  The past three or four years now we've seen giants sneak through the drive along the houses too close for gun shooting.  If it's too cold though, I'm just taking the shotgun just because I haven't practiced shooting all bundled up.  I think after opening day, the deer are too spooked where we're at to consider taking a bow.

LOL, I have enough trouble hitting them with a gun when they are moving, let alone, a bow.

Hey man, good luck to ya.  I would set up in much different areas than if were rifle hunting. Think escape cover with bedding areas.  I would be in a tree over some major trails through the thick stuff.

In rifle, the urge is to have a good vantage point.  With the bow, think tight cover.

Deer are so unpredictable after the first three or four hours on opening day, that the bow doesn't seem practical.  But I'd still use it if I were hunting close to houses.  I love deer meat, so I'll probably stick with the gun, but I wouldn't rule the bow out by any means.
