Tiny Steelie
This morning while fishing the project waters at Walnut, I caught a very small rainbow trout/steelie that was about 6 to 8 inches long. It did not look like a typical smolt, but more like a baby rainbow. Any ideas about why a tiny little trout like that might be swimming with the big boys? I also landed two very fresh jacks this morning.

Hey I once saw a single turkey amongst a flock of geese, maybe he was just confused.

actually ive seen trout that small never even leave the stream...someone also told me that they dont ever leave the stream they were put/born in until they are about 11inches long..

I kinda think you are right cp13. It was pretty stange. I caught a small "stockie" brown last fall in Walnut. That was pretty interesting since I don't think they stock brownies in Walnut, just steelies. I makes you wonder what is actually happening with these fish and if there is some natural reproduction going on.

Elk @ Girard park.
Landed around 13 or so. Water looked good. Leaves are getting bad,though.

I fished the project waters on Walnut for about an hour and a half and put 4 on the bank, not including the little fella and lost 3 or 4 more. I had a nice male on and got tangled up with a couple of other guys and just could not fight the fish properly and it broke me off. The fish were pretty eager to bite until the crowds showed up. As soon as all the bait and lead started slapping the water, they pretty much shut right down.

I actually got a large male today. He was about 10-11 lbs. First big one all year.
I had to leave them biting....Gosh darn work....ARRGGGHHHHH!

I hate having to leave when the fish are biting... Fortunately for me, they had pretty well shut down and all that was going on was getting snagged up with other fisherman. When that happens, it is time to leave....

It takes a lot of patience and skill to work around all the folks that don't have a clue, but if you can keep your focus and temper under control, it can be productive. There are some really huge fish that travel those waters. Also, I need a place to get in and out quickly and the project waters are fine. I will start fishing the upper portions of the creeks soon as can get some time to do a bit more scouting.

Is it just me or does the brown trout fishing get better every year on the erie tribs? I saw probably one of the nicest Brown trout taken at the mouth of 16 mile, Kept, but what can you do. Last time I checked 16 mile doesnt even get stocked with steelies, and they always seem to keep coming back. Maybe, just maybe there is some natural reproduction with some of the browns stocked on the east side, I know they get dumped in there. It's a nice thought anyways....

back in 2003 i caught a 6 inch steelhead at walnut in august lol so I guess you can say i've caught one steelhead in my 4 years of fishing for them

Last December I caught a 15 inch brown trout. It was so light colored it actually looked silver like the steelhead when they come out of the lake. I was assuming this fish had been stocked in the spring and washed into the lake and came back to mingle the creeks in the late fall. Hard to tell where these fish come.

yeah my friends little brother did the same thing. They get silver because of all the baitfish they go out to the lake and crush. Im sure they're there, but just from the stockings probably.
