clipped fins

I have caught many steelheads this year with a missing right pectorial fin. I have caught probly 20 this year alone. I usually catch more than one on the days that I catch them. That leads me to believe that a school of these fish are in the area.
which state in the Erie watershed still clips fins?

maybe spoonchucker or PIangler would know...

I couldn't tell you offhand. Chuck Murray mentioned that the PF&BC was going to start a fin clip program, but I don't think that you would be seeing any Penna, clips yet. Next time I see him, I'll ask. He would know who's, if not ours they are.

I've known guys who will clip fins when they catch a fish so they can recognize it if they catch it again.  I've never done this but I've met many people who do. Most of the guys that I've met who do this tell me they clip the top of the tail.

Thats what someone told me, michigan fish.

    Thanks for the answer.

On a positive note, all the clipped fish are in the 5 pound range. I landed a few big ones this year and all the big ones were not clipped. My biggest so far was around 14-15 pounds, a true HOG. It was your typical huge male. funny thing was, the day I caught that big one, I had 2 others hooked that were around the same size judging from the tail size as I fought them. I guess the fish tend to run by size to some degree.
I would love to see some fish tagged with locaters so we could see where they go. I'm surprized there hasent been a study done on that.

I usally hit the clip fins in September.
Lack of rain has the fish messed up.

Fin clipping and gill plate clipping has ben don for  years, I'm sure you have seen a gill plate clip, half the gill plate will be missing. I use to know  what club of organization did the identification clip but Ive ben out of the loop for too long to say of hand, but the 3cu did some identification clipping I thought it was a gill clip.

Maybe they were cutting flies of of the swimming tackle shops?????? :)

Yeah, there's no way they were clipping nightcrawler harnesses or mepps off of them, just flies.

Just checked my pics from this year, no clippers for me so far. Maybe this week.
