the "AP" stamp dates it mid 30s (thinking 33-36)

Its not a wide drum... but at 3 5/8" it should be prime on my light switch rod
the missing hardware is the spare/non-functinonal set
It needs some cleaning and some oil
also need to switch it to Left-hand retrive

should sing with some spring steelbows or smallmouth

    Rammy,

Did you trying flipping the pawl ("[t]he "triangle clicker" (sorry i don't know proper terms)") over as suggested to you on Spey Pages to "convert" the reel to LHW? I ask because I have an older St. John, which appears to have the same check system as your Uniqua. When I flipped the pawl on my St. John, I found that the check system was exerting the same resistance when I was reeling in as when I was pulling line from the spool. Obviously, the check system should exert minimal resistance when line is being reeled in. I talked to some one who makes no claim to being an expert on vintage Hardy reels but has 30 years experience dabbling in fly fishing and was told that the check system on my St. John couldn't be reversed so the reel could be converted to LHW the way later check systems can. According to him, you can easily tell if a reel can be converted to LHW by flipping the pawl by seeing if MK 2 is stamped on the reel. Just curious as to what you found when you flipped the pawl on your Uniqua.

I don't see any carbon fiber or disc drag on that reel.

i flipped the pawl on my 4" uniqua (50s) back when i got it... i was a bit worried on my 3 5/8s (being it was older)
the flip on the 4 made it from RHR to LHR... the resistance was the same (similar to your st. john)
as any jedi (including you) would know, i really don't care about the amount of resistance... as long as it doesn't over spool
thats why the tension adjustments never get touched
    here is the flipped 4"

so yes, i did flip the 3 5/8.. and it effectively made it a LHR... resistance on the outgoing and smooth on the pick up

It takes a bit more work than just turning over the pawl to make it LHW.
I actually like RHW for bigger fish and because the handle doesn't catch your running line. (RH caster)

Here are some before and afters with the clean up
1950ish 3 3/8 perfect branded for Kerr's sporting goods in Beverly Hills CA
    Kerr's has a pretty interesting story- http://fishinghistory.blogspot.com/2011/04/52-trade-houses-part-3-kerr-sport-shop.html
and ads a bit of a cool factor for me, since i know a bit of history on it
the reel came is fairly good shape... just old and an not heavily used

so the it needed a good cleaning an oil
45min soak in 4parts warm water 1 part vinegar... taking out to clean every 10mins
then 20mins in warm water with one drop of dawn
a rub down with a paper towel
then deep rise with cold water
    air dry over night
good lube with hot sauce oil and grease

falling into rank with the others...

    Yeah... they get water time
they aren't super collectable... but i'm also careful while fishing them

the perfect may be on a 3/4switch or mostly for single handers

here is the cleaned up 3 5/8 uniqua

I used it this spring on my 4/5 switch with some sucess...
    its loud

the 4" uniqua wide-drum is for the bigger rods

    that 4" hasn't got a fish... yet
i bought it in response to loosing the biggest and baddest steelhead on a reel that was undergunned

no... nothing on this thread is HDR
just minor color adjustments in lightroom... and the circle spey shot it right out my buddy's camera

    http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o138/kh67807/winter%202012/49dd03ea.jpg2 new ones

    1920's hardy uniqua
    unmarked size... guessing 3 3/8
needs cleaned up... and then oil and grease

This one is a bit of a mystery
uniqua style latch.... but no brand markings
3.5" with a bit wider drum, but not "salmon" wide
should be perfect for a 6wt switch
"D" stamp for Dingley... one of (if not the) best real makers at hardy
the check system makes it the oldest reel i have
    it needs a good cleaning
