Just because you can do something, does not mean you ought to.  You have the right to fish and keep three steelies per day if you caught them legally, but to throw them away in the trash serves no good purpose and is an extremely selfish act on the part of the person who did it.  Is illegal, maybe not depending on whether the trash was in an appropriate place.  Is it unethical and immoral, IMHO absolutely yes.
