    Transam,
Look at the leader thread.  It's got all kinds of information.  The best knot for me is the improved clinch knot.  I use it for almost everything.  As for the nail knot, skip that and just get some of the not-a-knot pins that slip (with great difficulty) into the end of the fly line and then connect the fly line to the pin with a clinch knot.  It ain't purist but it sure works.  My opinion is: steelies are stupid, keep it simple and easy on yourself.

Hi, try this way, not sure if I can explain it but here goes.
Fly line in your fingers, get a toothpick or large needle and line up with the end of the fly line,  hold the thick end of the leader agianst the fly line pointing in the other direction, take the thin end of the leader and make a big loop, hold about 3-4 inches of the leader sticking passed the fly line,
the thin end points the same direction as the fly line.
While holding all three lines and the needle wrap the but of the leader around the end of the flyline 5 times, start the wraps at the front of the fly line and closely wrap away from the end, sinch the wraps with your thumb and start to pull the end of the leader, when it gets close moisten with spit, get knot semi- tight and work to the end of the needle making sure you dont pull the fly line out of the knot.
Leave enough extra line at the start to get a grip on the thick end of the leader, pull both ends of the leader and BINGO, easiet nail knot is done.
Exactly the same knot, a whole different process!
Let me know if this helps......Jeff

Trans Am,  As posted before 'Animated knots.com" is an excellent step by step site for all kinds of knots. One that I been using lately to connect fly line to leader and different size leaders is the Albright knot. Pretty easy to tie and seems very secure.   Lou

I use a needle and thread it thru a short section of the fly line, then thread the leader thru the hole, after removing the needle. Then a tie a single uni knot with the leader onto the fly line.

If you have a hard time threading the leader thru use a needle threader thru the fly line and pull the smaller end of the leader thru the fly line. That wouldn't work with a knotted leader though

I use a single uni-knot. I use these on all my rod. never had one fail. Even on my 10wt saltwater lines.  I then put a loop knot at the end of a 4 to 6 inch section so I can loop to loop my leader to it. A lot of the new Orvis lines are doing this. You can also put some epoxy on the uni-knot which helps it slide thru the guides.

Go to a "Fly Shop" and purchase some flies, a few leaders with a loop at the end, and whatever else you would like. Then ask them to tie in a piece of hard mono with a loop at the end. They will even show you how to tie the knots.
    Good luck.

LEADER LOOPS!!!!!!   different companies make leader loops that you connect to the end of your flyline and you can get at dicks or gander mtn.  they work great.  PM me if u need to know what kind i use.

trans am, i have the same problem with that **** nail knot.  But, Try the Nailess Nail Knot.  I saw it in a fly mag and found it much easier than the regular one.  or just get a 2 dollar nail knot tier at walmart they have them there.

learn to tie the nail knot. It is invaluable to know. Once you can tie it, you can use pretty much anything as the 'nail'.

There is the nail knot tool that is helpful. From the side it looks like a little wedge. It works well, especially when you are learning. Once you see how the knot is supposed to look as you pull it tight, you can see how it works to tie later.

For most of my general rods, I'll nail knot a 12" piece of either 20 or 25 lb test mono to the line and tie a perfection loop in the end. If you tie the two knots right the first time, you don't have to change them ever. The only time I tie my leaders direct are on my dry fly rods where I want to minimize bulk and have the smoothest transition as I can. Then I'll either nail knot directly or every now and then I'll thread and glue a leader.

    Thanks
    Rick
