Carp on the fly

Hey All
Been hearing about carp on the fly and thought i might give it a try. Sounds like it could be fun. Anyone fish the pittsburgh area for them? Any tips on what kinds of water to target? Whats the best time of year? etc. etc. Thanks for your help

big mud flats when the water starts to get warm but before they start to spawn. The upper end of most lakes should hold some. All of the streams that run into the rivers hold fish that can be caught on nymphs and similar 'bugs'. Also, if you just want to have some fun find a place where the carp key in on bread and fish some bread flies. Below waterside restaurants will do it. Pymatuning spillway will also.

    thanks

Susquehanna river is a great place to site fish for tailing carp. There they are on rock bottom looking for crayfish. It is just like bone fishing. Make a trip there every year to fish for them.

Susqy is a great place for carp.  Of course, carp and catfish are about the only fish left in the river to fish for.

anyways... book a trip with this guy for susquehanna river carp.

speaking the of the susquehanna, are you guys reading the Riverwatch blog?  It's really putting out some great info and offers a unique look into some of the controversies concerning the river.

    Troutman:

Bread flys work well, if you can call a bread fly a fly ? I make mine from the white filter material like the kind you wrap round a a intake vaulve on some kinds of motors. Just pinch a corner of it and tie to the hook. Chum with some bread to get them feeding and flip it out there and hold on. I use this set up at Pymie by the spillway, caught a nice 15lber there on this a few years ago. Not really "purist" style, but still fun as heck !
Never caught one on the fly in the river, but I hear that Mullberry flys work well when the berries are ripe and falling into the water.

Try Elk Creek when they're spawning - literally hundreds - many hook-ups - lots of fun!

God does not take from your life, the time spent fishing!
