I have a light sinking tip fly line, one of SA's, but I can't remember the name. Wet Tip express, streamer express, one of those.

It works fine, but for the water that I fish it doesn't do anything that different lengths of sink tips looped on to a floating line wouldn't.

there are different tapers and heads on the streamer express lines

...and it is not like adding a section of sink to your existing floating line
that will add a nasty hinge and the front taper of your floating line can not handle the grainage of a tip
the "handling line" is only 13 ft with taper... your floating line will be 30ft at best
    will it work? yes
    but it won't be pretty

i was looking at the Floating Kelly Galloup
should have the ability to turn over and shoot big flies

if i were to get a sink... it would be the short (26' head)

i've Fished the 30' and it was nice... D-nymph has one of the lines for a 6wt that i've fished too

I have a rio outbound short 10wt still in the box
waiting for some warm temps and soft water

I have two SA sink tips, one is a 10' fast sink tip for a 6 weight. It's nice, I like it. One of my knucklehead friends cast a big old wind knot into the tip and I can't get it out though. Other than that it's good for smaller flies. It won't sink a #2 zoo cougar though.

I also have an 8 weight SA streamer express with the 30' fast sink tip. Bought it for streamer fishing for browns on the White in Arkansas, and I use it in PA for the Yough and bigger smallie waters. It's heavy and there are some casting techniques you can use to make it easier on the shoulder. Strip it in, one back cast and lay it back out onto the water in front of you. Then one quick backcast, double haul, and it freaking shoots 60-70 feet with little effort. Love it when it's appropriate to use.

    D-Nymph,

How is casting the 10' sink tip? A pain or not too bad? What kinds/sizes of flies do you throw with it?

Not bad at all, even kjh could cast it! OK, so honestly he's a much better caster than I am, but still... Obviously, a sink tip is heavier than a floater, but it's not that much heavier that I've had/noticed a problem. You don't need to back cast like you do with a floater, the heavy tips shoot like mad, really easy. The rod I use it on is an older ST. Croix Imperial, and the action is kid of slow, not sure if the newer fast action rods would make it easier yet. Haven't tried one of them.

Any sink tip is a pain if you think you're going to also want a floating line in one day, you have to carry an extra spool with a floater on it. That's why I hesitated to buy one for years, but I'm glad I did. I hate splitshot unless nymphing, and that tip gets me the extra 4-5 feet of depth I want in the (mostly smallmouth) rivers where I use it.

I wouldn't even bother getting one unless you get a faster sinking tip.

Flies I use are basic, wool head sculpins, rabit strip stuff, zonkers, conehead or bead head buggers (Olive, Black, White, Brown, in that order, obviously), clousers, other random streamers & intruders, smaller ciscus peanuts, etc. From #8s up to #2s. The sculpins are on #2 stainless shorter shank saltwater hooks. Most have some kind of barbell eye, or cone or bead.

Flies with bulky deer hair heads will not sink much with that small of a tip though. You'll need the big SA Streamer Express type of line for them.

Take me to some of that water, we talked about last year, and you can try my line/lines out.

Not a problem. Just make sure that by mid to late May you're telling us all what an expert you are with your new Jim Teeny sink tip.

I like to use a 18" piece of heavy mono with a 3, 4 or 5 foot piece of sinking line with a 4 foot piece of light mono hook side for the rivers.
