Im going to have to try it. No use throwing egos around over it. I do think I would be able to rope a braided tippet out though.... I really don't see how or why it can't be done.

It might, but it won't be pretty. And if it doesn't work, using a heavier rod won't suddenly make it work.

A lot of it depends on how you're fishing and what you've got tied to it. You could use a leader made of 3" schedule 40 PVC for steelhead because you don't have to actually cast it. For pike, you'll be wanting to wing it out there a ways, and you'll need a leader with some backbone to turn over those big flies. Of course, pike aren't really fussy about presentation, so you could just throw it out there in a lump and go from there.

dimebrite, you're changing the issue. It was asked if a braid leader would work/turn over. A braid tippet is an entirely different matter. With a sufficient fly line and tapered, stiff leader, a braid tippet would be feasible. You'd still probably end up with sloppy turnover, but it'd work.

there is no use for a traditional "leader"
i run straight mono (30#) into metal... 5ft total at most

this is not fly casting like a 5wt for trout
big open loops
dutch style casts
tripple hauls
no un-needed false casts
shooting lots of line

2 back casts should put you at 80'+

I couldn't hit 80' if i tied my fly to an arrow

Has anyone used braid as appose to steel leader?
Thinking of trying that this year to give fly more action.

hey cold. My interpretation of mikas post here was using the braid in place of the steel leader Only... for the comment on castig for steelhead ill take the 5th on that one... hey slick kjh is perfectly right. No muscle or force is necessary for 80+ casts.technique is the key. A good fast action rod properly matched with a line is also just as important. A little instruction goes a long way as well. Good luck...

...when a line is properly hauled with 50' out behind you... 30' will easily shoot once hauled forward...... 50+30 equals 80 :).... hey kjh since I've never fly fished for pike im gonna ask you a question. Are 80' casts necessary for pike? Id assume only for bank fishing in certain spots right? Id hate to see people get discouraged and not try... maybe a pontoon or kayak would allow people with less casting ability to not have to rely on far casts... just as a flats boat allows shorter casts to bonefish...

the longer the cast = the more water you are fishing
a boat makes no differnce since you are not sight casting

you can fish a 15'cast... you just won't be covering as much water

ok thanks.... that makescomplete sense. One more question if you don't mind... im assuming that you are casting along the banks just outside the weed line opposed to casting straight out from the bank... is this assumption correct? Thanks in advance. I can't wait to try this....

i was reading this and decided to go out and practice. in my driveway the furthest i could cast was right around 60' but i doubt i could do it in a boat because of the way i was transfer my weight would be hard as heck to stay upright.

60' is a very honest cast. On a stable boat eleVated off the water I can usually cast a little furtherthan I can from the bank or in the water.
