two months away!

the best time of the year for trophy pike on flies is coming up in march. I don't know about you guys but I love hitting the shallows in march on a 50 degree day with my 8 weight throwing some big streamers for pike. There is nothing more exciting them having a 30+ inch pike smash a 5 inch streamer a few feet away from you. Any of you guys ever hit the shallow "flats" in Erie for these guys? also get some big largemouths which are a treat and usually every year I get lucky and catch a decent sized muskie, not better time, just a waiting game now

never did the erie trip but have fished canada a couple of times.  truely some of the most exciting fishing i've ever done.  nothing like watching 40"+ fish inhaling a fly 20' away and spraying you with water. then hang on until they get tired.

My buddy and I do really well in April for pike. We don't throw anything special except for bigger clousers.

i use booth an 8.5' 8wt and a 9' 9wt rods.usually a topwater on the 8wt and a bunny leach or big streamer on the 9wt.  always use steel or ti leader.

yeah steel leaders are a must, but usually i just tie a bunch of pearl clousers and other colors and they work good 4-6 inches is good size. I uses an 8 weight 10 foot for most of my pike fishing

catching a pike on a fly rod is one of my 2011 goals. I'd most likley use my 9wt. Any special type of leader you use? I was thinking of the presque isle lagoons. What's your opinion of them?

well anywhere in the head of the bay is good, I've used a float tube in there before and had big ones! but gander carries fly leaders with steel extensions on the end that I use. To me the most important factor in fly fishing with larger flies around 6 inches is to have trailer hook. I've had countless hook ups where the fish hit it by the side and I missed it. Good luck!

Anyone out there got some good ties for musky/pike? We have plenty of steelhead and bass fly tutorials on here but few, if any that can be claimed as "true" pike/ski flies. BTW, you guys have inspired me, I will post a pic of me and a pike from french creek or one of it's tribs (on the fly) in 2011. I am psyched that I can use my 8 wt, thought I may have to step up to 10.... Thanks again!

    Good luck,

Hooks: first hook: TMC 811S 3/0, second and third: Mustad C70SD 1/0
Materials: Crystal flash, largest rabbit strips you can get, lead eyes, red hackle, wire leader material.

    1. Start by tying the third segment first. Tie down a few strands of crystal flash, then tie down the bunny strip tail...then tie down the rest of the strip at the base of the tail and wind forward, then finish the fly.
    2. Thread wire through the hook eye, place second hook in vise. Tie down the wire leader material the whole length of the hook, fold back the tag ends tie them down and use super glue to secure it. Then tie on the crystal flash and then the bunny strip (don’t tie a tail) wind forward and finish.
    3. Do the same thing with the wire leader material, crystal flash, and the bunny strip, but this time leave room for the lead eyes, tie in the eyes and glue them, behind the eyes tie down red saddle hackle and make a collar, then finish the fly with an epoxy head.

Note: You really don’t need three hooks, you can use wire cutters to nip off the second and third hooks at the hook bend if you choose...Pike tend to hit the fly on the head anyway...

anglers underestimate the color of yellow in all respects of species... nice tie

ps... love the clarity in that pic, are you shooting in that size or is that an edit?

Your right Joe, yellow can be a killer at times.
I copied that picture so have no clue why it was so large, but it really showed up nice.
I like the idea of being able to snip the trailer to make it smaller.

wow those all look great for large patches of grass! I use similar stuff around weed patches, they like pink for topwater for some reason.
