Area Ice Fishing Report

Went out Friday the 17th for the first time this year, and the first time I can remember getting out before Christmas since the 70's.

I started at Misery Bay and worked a couple holes for about an hour and a half and got nothing. I drove by Horseshoe and nobody was out, so I check out the North Pier to see if there were any hardy burbot fisherman. No one was there or across on the South Pier either.

Next I went to the Marina and hit paydirt! Two perch and a bluegill in about an hour, all on a small chartreuse jig head loaded with maggots.

Today (Saturday) I drove down to Woodcock around 0900 and no one was out and I was alone, so discretion being the better part of valor, I headed up to Edinboro Lake. There was one hut north of the point close to shore, but I think they access from private property there. No one was out along 99, went back to the fingers and still nobody out fishing, so....

Out to Lake Pleasant. There were a half dozen guys out and man, was it cold and windy. Hopped in my hut and fished for about an hour and a half - one hit, one 14-inch rainbow on a chartreuse jigging Rapala (W3). That was it for the day. As I left I measured the ice thickness - three inches! WOW, a little thin for my liking. I was close to shore, but in 17FOW.

Gotta be making ice with these cold nights, barring a thaw, ice should improve day by day....

I walked out about 75 yards in somebody else's fresh tracks, but I concluded since they stopped and came back, I'd better too.

It is froze all the way across...I gotta believe it will be tip-up time there by mid week.

Fished pleasant lake today, 4-5 inches of ice

Caught one rainbow trout over 3 hours of fishing; the bite was turning on as I was leaving in the afternoon but didn't care to stay any longer.

South side of the bay (Chestnut/Dock) has as much ice as Misery. Fished Sat. afternoon/evening and most of Sunday. Bite was decent on Sat. and much slower on Sun. Great to be on the ice!

    220, 221. Whatever it takes....

Shenango Ice _--OPEN WATER--- 2010/12/25 11:40:24 (permalink)
Open water this (12/25 )morning over river channel at east end of lake... be careful because it looks like it is continuing to open up to the west so there probably is thin ice over the channel towards RT 18. Current in open area is fast so ice will be eroding from underneath.
