Unusual??????
Since I don't hunt turkeys, I really don't know that much about the -- other than if you baste a Butterball every 30 minutes with melted butter and the right spices and it has been stuffed with apples that soaked over night in the right wine, it turns out pretty good -- so I wondered if what I saw yesterday while deer hunting was unusual or not.
I had a flock of 9 turkeys come in behind my tree stand yesterday and scratch around for about 20 minutes. When they finally decided to leave me alone, the cross in front of my tree stand, each one hopping up on a log before crossing a tram road at about 50 yards. I glasses each bird and every one of them had a beard. Soem had a very short jake-like beard -- 1 -2 inches protruding -- and others had beards that drug on the ground.
Is it unusual for there to be all gobblers together like that?

No, not unusual at all, gobblers will group up for Fall / Winter.
Hens and young 'ins also group up, most often seperate from the gobblers.

What ready2fish said, although usually gobblers flock with birds of the same age. Thus having about same beard length.

I,ve seen a lot of jakes with long beards in the fall and winter,because I was greedy,I pass on 3 jakes in range this fall because I wanted one of the long beards in the flock of 6. I didn't get a fall turkey this year.I've taken quite a few fall long beards and sometimes there all long beards and other have been mixed with jakes.

LOL ^^ Steel Junkie, I have at times seen all longbeards together, but it seems that I more often see a fall flock consist of all males vs. divided by age group. Maybe it has to do with the available number of male birds in an area? When I hunted in SW PA there definately were more turkeys than where I currently live in NW PA. I remember seeing more seperated flocks (longbeards vs jakes). Here in NW, I tend to see the male flocks more mixed with older and younger birds. Just a thought... And, Tuna, I didn't get a Fall bird either. I had a flock of hens and young birds at 40 yds the last day of the season here (Nov 27th). Could have easily pounded one. I held off because it was early in the day and there was a flock of about 12 males (mixed longbeards and jakes) also using he same area. The close flock fed off and I never saw the gobblers. I did see the hen/young flock again at 3 PM but again elected to pass. Oh well!

Took this pic yesterday evening while sitting on the hill with the spotting scope...  84 jakes, gobblers and hens. Biggest flock I have ever seen. The pic was taken from aprox. 800 yards away. Ironhed

I've got a long beard, bearded hen, and six other hens at my bird feeder as I type. Yesterday at this time there were 4 doe there.

 I took this'n from a nice group of longbeards this fall season. 11" beard, 1.5" spurs, just a hair under 22 lb. The bachelor groups band together, and all they do during the fall and winter is fight'n with each other and eatin'.

They run like that a lot whenever they arent breeding- They even gobble a bit year round on the roost- not all the time but sometimes.
