Slip-On Leader Loops

since I'm knot tying challenged ...do these Slip-On Leader Loops work? I'm a total newbie so is it really that easy? slip the leader loop over the fly line and heat shrink?

Also does anybody of a flyshop around Venango/Clarion counties other than Oil Creek Outfitters? Nothing against Oil Creek Outfitters, but I dont travel to Titusville often

Thanks

I did use them for a while but didn't have much luck with them Had them slip off. I had them slide off when landing big fish or when trying to get unsnagged. With the slickness of the flylines these days the shrink tube dosen't really hold. One thing that will help is putting a nail knot at the end of the loop with real fine mono. Then put the tubing over that which helps loop go thru guides or use some Knot sense from Loon. Know I nail knot a piece on mono to the end of my fly lines then put a loop in it with a loop knot. Use this method for all my lines never lost a fish yet form loop coming off. Even big Stipers in the salt.

I use the loops. I like them...I haven't had one come loose yet. Do your self a favor and add a drop of super glue to it.I don't know if it's out of your way, but there is Neshannock Creek Flyshop in Volant.

I've used the sleeves for a while now. Never had one come off. Do not trim the thing short (use the whole sleeve) and just use the shrink wrap to hold the fray down and keep it from catching in one of your guides. Make sure you get the size that fits your line wt. and you won't have any problem with it coming off. I HIGHLY recomend them.

+1 on the drop of glue and +1 to not trimming them...... I am holding on to the shrink wrap for something else. I believe mine are bear tooth got em at PR's but I bet they have them at Fishusa  So far so good with them and they are soft so they don't hurt the guides.

Maure's sporting goods on rte. 8 atop the hill south of Franklin has some fly tying stuff. also rte 66 sporting goods on rte 66 north of shippinville.

i've used the slip loops. they are good when i use the same reel spool for many different creeks this way i can change full tapered leaders from 7x to 3x depending on where i'm fishing, what i'm fishing for and how small dries i'm using.

on my lightest rod reels i nail knot the leader to the line. gives a smoother presentation and straighter line.

I had 2 fly off the end of the line. With the shrink tube.

Now, if the line doesn't come with a loop, I nail knot an Amnesia perfection loop to it, coated with Knotsense.

    I do what cold said:
"I nail knot an Amnesia perfection loop to it"

I am terrible at nail knots so the last 2 lines I bought I asked the fly shop to add a small section of Amnesia with a perfection loop on the end. Then you are set for pre made leaders that have loops already made or you can learn to tie a perfection loop and you are set. (much easier than nail knot IMO)

I use the braided loop connectors. I've never had any issue with them before. The nail knot and aquaseal is good too.

Back in the 60's I pushed the eyelets into my Cortland fly line. Seriously though, I don't like what they do to your fly line. I have seen them rust through also. There was a thread awhile back where Plum Bob explained how he used the braided loops, but threw the shrink tubing away. He wrapped the connection with tying thread, and gave it a coating of (I don't remember) either Sally Hansen's or super glue. I use this method, and it works well. I have had a loop or two come apart where it is woven into itself, but that was after considerable use. I have never had a loop come off after I wrapped it, ala Plum Bob.

the eyelets are a pain to attach and use. Like fish said, they rust and tear up your line.

After threading the loop onto the fly line and positioning a 2 inch piece of shrink tube, one inch on the loop and one inch over the fly line, i use a toothpick to put a small amount of super glue into the shrink tube. Then holding a hair dryer with my knees i turn it on high and twist the line over the hot air to shrink the tube. Never had one break or pull apart. Match the loop size to the fly line size and your good to go!

that's too much junk on the ent of the line. aften causing the line to sink or hang up on the eye. i just tie the line onto the loop of the leader using a sheet bend knot. quick, easy and low profile. the knot slide thru the eye without catching.

blue line would be the leader loop (use perfection loop for this if not on your leader when you buy it)

Never liked the leader loops. Even cut one off a fly line that came with it attached.

I use the leader links, but have used this also, never had it fail.
If your leader doesn't have a loop, tie a perfection loop in it.
Very simple, and fast to tie. Once you've done it 3 times, you can do it in maybe 10 seconds. Called Castwell knot.

    Pete,

Do you like the leader links? I have tried them with my lighter lines on the backing to fly line connection, and they seem OK. I use a nail Knot on my heavier lines. They aren't hard to tie, and they won't come apart. The leader links seemed difficult with an 8 wt. WF line. I used a drop of Super glue on the leader links between my fly line and backing.

Never had a problem with the links. There are two sizes. I think
one for 7 to 10 wt. The other 3 to 6 I believe. I just use them for leader to fly line. Used Castwell for backing. Never liked the braided loops because they seem to make the flyline sink, causing drag. Also, they seemed to cast strange, at least for me, with my
    very minimal skills.

The links are the way to go, I think. You can put a new tapered
leader on in about 30 seconds. Just clip the old one off, push the
new one through, and tie an overhand knot, clip excess, pull snug.
In 7 years, broke one. Pulling a snag out of a tree.

I suppose I might use a knot if I were fishing for salmon, but would never use the loops.

Just checked, small are for flyline < 6, medium larger than 6.
Only place I've seen that has them consistently is Bass Pro shops-

I just loop end of Fly Line over itself, tie 2 Nail Knots ( mine are ugly ), and super glue. Or, just Nail Knot to the Butt of Leader and glue.

My goal is to simplify this whole fly fishing thing.

i've used that many times also.  it's a modified sheet bend knot, in my opinion.  same idea, very effective.  as for strength, i catch 10+ lb steels with this set up and haul bass out of the weeds.  i hope to catch a musky and pike on it soon.

When making sink tips lately I've just doubled the line back, and wrapped it with thread off a tying bobbin, and then coated it with sally hansen's. I haven't had any problems with them yet. I like the braided loop connectors for the tip of a flyline though, I use them as a strike indicator.

psu, as you see some people like them but most do not. They are a quick fix if you need one, they do spook fish if you use them to attach leaders to fly lines. They do come off on big fish glue or no glue.

I bought a nail tying tool and after like 8 tries i got a good nail knot. But before I got this knot tool I bought some slip on leaders and will give it a shot before going to the knot tying tool

Do yourself a favor and learn the knots.  I used to sweat it, but worked hard and can tye them all pretty well.  I used to only fish by myself , so I didnt have to tye my knots in front of anyone.  I don't think you can get any better than the knots.
