Floats???

I am curious what type of floats people are using.  I have been using Phantoms, but my buddy loves Drennin.  So what keeps your bait or fly afloat?

I am a drennan fan for PA tribs, Ohio and NY I go to a more visible float, usually the water isnt crystal clear which makes it possible....

Bug,I truly see no difference between the clear drenna/blackbird styles or balsa which I use and make myself as far as fish catching in clear water or not..When the sun is out the clear ones seem to sparkle a lot.Heard someone did a scuba test and were amazed how the clear floats showed up under water..Where a balsa float looks like any of a million pieces of wood or branches that float over a fish's head everyday..Ray

Interesting infro Ray.  I am curious about the shapes and sizes.  It seems I may be using the wrong size of floats as well as shape.  I am thinking about experimenting with different shapes to see what gives me the best drift.

Bug,I like the one style in the above pic, right side 2nd one down 5 gram on bigger tribs 3 on small stuff but I like mine with a little longer stem on top makes it easier for me to see how much I'm trotting back my offering plus a better visibilty..Chartreuse top in early morning light and right at dusk, flo orange all day in between, hate trying to find a chart float in the bubbles/foam..Ray

Thanks Ray for the info.  I will have to give them a try.  I have been using the small Blackbird Phantoms.

I think they are a little too small for the heavier and deeper water.  I bought some Sheffields in the 7 gram size.  I was planning on giving them a try later.

Balsa all the way. And from my experience, low and clear water doesn't harm the use of balsa one bit. If a piece of wood scares fish, then they definitely aren't biting.

    Ray,
They haven't been turning, but definitely have been sinking. I don't have a lathe setup here at my apartment. So sometime in the spring when I go home I'll have to replenish some of my supply. Actually, next weekend I'll have an extra day to turn a few...pending I go home and not fish the NY tribs. :)  You going to be out this weekend in Erie?

I fish balsa pretty much all the time, like that's surprise.  I fish one float style for almost everything.  I can it in fish big water, fast water, slow water.  It's a thin float about 1/2" at the widest part about 3" long in the body with a long base stem to make the float balance.  I turn it in two sizes and I'm thinking of doing it in one more small size to get me down to three floats to cover everything except very big water or very big baits.  Once the water gets thin I go with very small floats in a carrot or acorn shape.  When water gets real big I move to a bigger float but that's about it these days.  I fish out of a fanny pack these days weather I float or fly fish.  I like to travel light anymore.  I think most would be surprised how uncomplicated I have made my float fishing.  I've put most of my technique in my finger next to my little finger on my right hand.  My shotting patterns are pretty uncomplicated too.  I may shove the shot around to adjust but I'm pretty simple anymore.
