Yeah, It was fun and hard. I was fishing off a 3-4 ft bank with no net and had to lean over and grab him( hence the gloves). I was wondering where all the gills were in that place. should've takem him outta there, but its not our place and the owner only allows us to fish if we are 100% C&R.

Though the picture isnt real clear, Judging by head shape, mouth shape, body shape & fins, Im pretty certain thats not a flathead. That looks to be a very large channel cat. At any rate, congrats, great fish.

I've caught plenty of both and this one was kinda hard for me to tell. The head was flater than the pic appears. Plus the color was more like that of a flat head than a channel. The tail was slightly forked, more like a channel, but some flath heads tails are not square either. The anal fin looked more like a channel as well, It kinda had characteristics of both species, but either way, like you said it was a nice fish, thanks !
Anyone else want to weigh in on this ?

Im not really guessing, im basically sure its not a flat. I fish for them more than any other fish. They're my favorite species.

But heres something from the net to confirm what ive stated:

    "Flathead Catfish

The Flathead Catfish is a member of the Plyodictis genus (family) of fish and can grow to lengths of one hundred and fifty five centimetres (sixty one inches) and can weigh up to fifty six kilograms (one hundred and twenty three pounds).

The Flathead Catfish can be distinguished very easily from the Channel Catfish by looking at its mouth which has a lower jawbone that protrudes out further than its upper jaw bone.
    Channel Catfish

The Channel Catfish is a member of the Ictalurus genus of fish and can weigh up to between eighteen and twenty three kilograms (forty to fifty pounds), much less than the Flathead Catfish.

The Channel Catfish has a mouth which is very different to the Flathead Catfish where the upper jawbone protrudes out further than the lower jawbone.
    "
    ----

In the pic, the upper lip clearly protrudes further than the lower.

Very easy mistake to make, as big older channels take on a different shape than when younger.
