Olcott

When do the salmon start up the creeks? New to NY salmon fishing and wondering best times to head up.

They should be staging right outside the mouths now, and making some false runs at night. Once the water comes up a little they will be in the creeks. It wont be long, maybe 2 weeks? If you want to get into them thick with a chance of some browns and steel also, wait till October or November.

    Emal,
There are plenty of salmon, and some steel and browns at Olcott and the Oak Orchard. Not nearly as much water to fish as the Salmon river though.   Still a little early yet though.   We usually hit the oak in mid Oct..  Plenty of Salmon then and plenty of chances for steel and browns as well, more often than not.

Im originally from Michigan, having moved out east here (Central PA) 2 years ago due to work. This is going to be my first time fishing this side of the Great Lakes. From what I can see from Pulaski, it will be a zoo. So Im looking for an area that has a good amount of fish and not so many fishermen. This will be my wifes 2nd time salmon fishing, the first being on the Manistee (Big Water) so it will be nice to show her smaller waters where we can wade.

This weekend were going to go to Pulaski, and if too crowded then were going to travel west sampling the rivers along the way.

I posted the LSSU.EDU Fishcam post. Watching the run come in has me geeked.

worth a trip up to 18 mile yet?
also my buddy and i are much more interested in fly fishing than standing with hundreds of snaggers at the dam and are looking into oak orchard. never have fished there any word of reports coming from there?

the oak has a lil  more room but not sure of the pressure other  small streams in that area can be good at the right times..   this i a reports page for the oak have no idea how honest  they will be but it might help.    http://www.orleansoutdoor.com/conditions.htm

You can fish just about any where you want with the right "gear". I suggest full body armor with a nice riot helmet, full face sheild should do the trick. Just watch out for dem darn pinners. just sayin'................

White Robin; The Oak can get a little crowded at times. But still big enough to allow you to find a nice spot to fish. Olcott seems to have more fish; but also more crowding. Some of the smaller streams usually have both Browns and some Kings. Johnson's is my favorite as far as smaller. I try to hit them all at least once(half day) on every trip. The Oak has many great side benefits beside fishing. Parking near the stream, food at the same place, and bathrooms close at hand. Go to the Archery Club and you will see what I mean. Good luck.

    henhouse,
where are all these smaller streams located. ive been to olcott for the first time last year and everywhere else i will be new too. is there a map or somewhere where i can see where these other streams are? crowds dont really bother me but i would prefer stream fishing rather than a hole like burts dam and millions of nonsense snaggers
    thanks

Whiterobin; Go west from the Point Breeze area (Rte.18) and its only a short drive. You will cross it at Kuckville. Not good right there; but the stream will be on your left after that. Not a lot of good access, but it is usually not too crowded. Some sections are posted; so look before you try it.

Yeah I am being a butthead, but what ever happen to exploring and looking for streams rather then being spoon fed every little bit of info you need.  Anyone want me to meet them so I can take them to the exact spots and tie their flies on for them?  (WAIT I'LL EVEN HOOK THEM FOR YOU AND HAND YOU THE ROD)  ITS CALLED PREPERATION!!!

Was there this weekend, there were kings at the dam being snagged. I only saw steelhead downstream from there.
