Start with an 11'6" to 13' rod....a good beginner reel is and Okuma Sheffield...then upgrade from there if you find you really like the method.  Go online (Float fishing connection) and watch some videos then practice casting out in a field.  Good Luck!

No you'll have to spend 200 for the okuma shutupnfish mentioned above. Ebay is always a great place to find some deals.

Shutupnfish helped me put together my first rig...I got a Okuma Sheffield and a Raven 13' 6" float rod...Love the set-up, perfect for a beginner. Thinking of upgrading the reel, not sure yet.

The Sheffield is the best investment for the $.As far as a rod,a11'6" will do any water around. For around $80 you can get one from Bass Pro.enough backbone for Steel & salmon, but too much for trout. If all you fish is Erie,a 10'6" Cortland endurance noodle rod will serve you well and is light enough for trout,i use it on the yough, and it's bigger than anything that runs into Lake Erie.Pm if you have any questions. Will gladly put a couple different rod& reels in your hands before you buy one.

theres no need to actually invest in a centerpin outfit.  Just catch the fish on your fly rod, play it out for about 15 minutes before landing it, and then stick a screwdriver through its gills.

You'll have the same effect and get the same satisfaction.

Thats gotta be a joke right? I guarantee most pinners will flop a fish to the bank in half the time most fly guys will. Now the screwdriver through the gills idea is one I'll have to consider this season!

Thanks. That is one of the nicest things anyone has ever written about me in this section. Since you are my new BFF pindaddy I will agree with you. Sudsy sucks. But I do like where he is going with this. Pinners are easy to fire up. Especially ones with pa before pinner.

im going to have to disagree... I started with a 9 ft. rod, and though it's somewhat more difficult to get your casting style worked out, you will have the flexibility of fishing for steel and trout your first year, thus giving you more time on the water.  After you learn how to spin cast with 9 feet and grab something longer, say 11, you will be amazed with how much easier it is to get distance, but it's really not needed on any Pa stream.

ahhh... go the flyandfloatfishing site and watch the videos, or do a search.  This has been discussed in depth before.

OK the rod length is certainly a "to each his own thing"...I personally wouldn't ever go less than 11'6" though. I figure why not learn with what you will eventually end up with anyway? A 9' rod will not effectively keep the line off the water, even in the PA ditches. But if folks aren't using the method effectively/correctly, they wouldn't know the difference anyhow. There are plenty of places, even in PA, where a longer rod comes way more in handy than short. There were times I wish I had my 13' on Elk last year when I couldn't hit the seem I wanted but delt with it. I also made a pact with myself at one point last year to quit side casting all together and MAKE myself spin cast....after a few trips, it all came as second nature.

I guess I HAVE to somewhat agree w. you, because when I first started, I learned the wallis cast, and have never resorted to side casting, hence my track record w. no line problems.

I totally disagree with you about rod length.  A nine footer sucks, and your arm will tire, but let's be real here, you do not need that long of a drift in erie.  With some patience, you learn to trot better with a shorter rod, and achieve drag-free drifts w. no line on the water for long enough time that the float is positioned down stream, leaving the small amount of line that is on the water, behind the float.  This means... again, no drag.  It's rather annoying to fish beside my friends who fish with more than 10 feet.

as you said, to each his own, but don't think I don't know what I'm doing.

I'm not assuming you don't know anything, otherwise why would you be putting your .02 in here? However, I'm wondering how you could trott a line that you've casted out more than 30' to where fish are holding and keeping the line off the water with a 9 footer? The shortest rod I've float fished with is 10'6" and had a hard time with it until I got a longer rod. Yes, the longer rod adds more weight to the front, but I've learned to deal with it in exchange of fishing more effectively by controlling my drift better resulting in more action. A 9 footer can certainly work well if you're fishing 10 to 20 feet in front of you, but why limit yourself to that? Otherwise the argument that a 9 footer is just as good is nowhere in the picture in my opinion. As I said before, an 11'6" rod is the perfect medium as far as a "float" "pinning" rod goes for the Erie tribs.

I'll def. settle w. that, and I will agree that casting a longer rod is much much much easier than a smaller, and yes, you can keep more line off the water, making the drift easier.  I guess I was just trying to say a nine footer will get the job done if needed, and it's versatility in terms of having the ability to use it on smaller trout streams is nice.

my.02 worth,a 10'6"-11'6" in my opinion, because it is cumming from my fingers,is all anyone needs to fish PA.Yes a 13' is nice on those rare opportunities when you can utilize the extra rod length to your advantage, but for Erie, how often is that?If heading north or west to some bigger water a 13' is the ticket, when you have the room to really fish a good section of water.i tried the pin on a 9',and i did not like it,the rod was too short for my liking.Gonna put some bend in a few rods over the weekend, and yes Barry & Scott,I will be "SWINGING" fly's with the spey, hopefully a trout will be the first caught with it,but I'm sure a mud shark will be on the end before.I figure i have ventured to the "dark" side and beyond now.CPOS,pm me anytime you want to put a pin in your hand.

Barry, helped out alot. But have to fear all pinners, i will be running some nice and long marathon drifts over the weekend also.will be nice finally to fish without a herd of people around.A fish or two,3,4,5,and so on, will be a bonus.
