Kev what are you using for the butt hackle and neck on the bottom intruder? (black material) I am guessing arctic fox or finn raccon? Something spun but doesn't look like buck tail.

Sam I like what I am seeing! Kev Thanks for the rib. It looks nice. Here is something new for me. Got away from the intruder thing and went more towards the prawn. Think I got something here. Hope you all dig it.

ORIGINAL: SonofZ3 That prawn is seriously sweet man! I've always liked the General Practicioner and Ally's Shrimp... Any chance of posting or pm'ing the recipe for that prawn? Happy you like it. This is the first one I did. I havent fished it yet but she swims nicely in my pool. You can play with the colors but this is what I did. With dubbing I made an orange dubbing ball. 6 Lady Amherst tail fibers on each side. The dubbing ball will flair out the fibers. Next is orange and pink hackle. 3 turns. Repeat the same steps 1 more time. In the next and final segment I just put the dubbing and hackle, no Amherst. In front of the 2 hackles I put a sparse collar of mallard flank. Next is the JC if you want. Dumbbell eyes with some dubbing behind. Thats as easy as it gets. As I said this was my first one I did. In the next ones I make I'll be adding some crystal flash somewhere in there. Also will be changing the Amherst to rhea on some. Any questions shoot me a pm and I'll try and explain it better. Happy swinging.

Swinger: Your directions make sense, especially having the fly to look at too. I'll give some a shot. I like the way your pattern uses repeated segments. With 3 repetitions before the collar and eyes, or 4, you could make a super long tube, or a short one...pretty sweet!

Well since this is the steelhead fly thread maybe you guys could show your boxes full of flies. Looking for some inspiration and some new patterns to try out. That and I just love looking at other people's boxes.

Nice fly mark I think it is interesting that most of the flies marketed specifically for GL steelbows pull from Warmwater (bass and pike) streamers and trout nymphs rather than "traditional" steelhead and salmon patterns... given that the GL waters are more likely to be fished by anglers who also bass and trout fish... but it seams like there is a tendency for "GL flies" to be a exact replica/blocky flies (the green over white shiner/sculpin) rather than a fly tied for movement/ profile/ swim ability lets keep posting pictures... but maybe open some discussion on how and why we tie

movement/ profile/ swim ability I agree. The emerald pattern I posted has all that with the skull and gill plates an added bonus for a more life like appearence. The emerald shiner has a slim profile, translucent silver gray body with a touch of olive on the back. I test all my patterns in a tank for a visual and on the rivers for ability to catch fish at a high percentile. Of course the fly must look good to me, but also be effective to land a spot in my fly box and the emerald shiner pattern does slim down, has the translucent silver grayish center when wet and the marabou gives the fly the undulation. Marabou, pseudo hair, arctic fox... all have a place at my bench for swim ability.

what about casting? do you swing or strip? how does it handle current? being marabou, i bet it "pinns out"... will the skull and pates cut/deflect water? no need for a collar?

It dosn't pin out, there is enough center mass of material to keep the profile I want. As far as how do I fish it, mostly a dead drift with a swing at the end & slow deep pools I will strip it.

Nice fishskull fly! I used alot of fishskull patterns this year on my local warmwater river. Both swingin and strippin. Never gave a thought about tying up something for steelhead with them...until now! The patterns that I have been tying(using the fishskulls) are simple bucktails and rabbit strip(leech style) flies.

i was messing with a little more/longer material in the collar and less in the feelers but, mainly looking for a distraction while tying for a swap front angle back angle
