Are all the bowfin still packed in the spillway at the dam?  I actually had a blast there a few years ago catching bowfin.  There were some monsters in there.  Plus they're a cool looking fish IMO.

They are packed in there certains times of the year.....usually Spring....they are fun to catch....kinda prehistoric looking...they tear up white spinnerbaits...I caught em in Woodcock Creek before too...when the males are spawning they get a chartreuse spot on their upper tail....pretty cool....

Listed as a candidate species for being threatened, I don't think it is illegal to fish for them, but they must be released unharmed.

If I agreed with you we would both be wrong

You don't HAVE to release candidate species. It's just recommended.

So.. They are a candidate for being threatened, there is no season on them, and you think it is OK to not only fish for them but also keep them....nice.

Where did he say that or do you just make these things up as you go?

Seems to be infered in the text of his post...if you don't have to release them, then you can keep them? Not really much of a stretch......

Trust me, when you see one, you won't WANT to keep one.You don't have to be targeting them. When they are spawning you can't keep em off the hook.

I catch them often enough, and I have seen people keep them. I am in the habit of pointing out that they are a candidate spesies. If in fact they are "other game fish" with a daily limit of 50, then I will no longer suggest they are to be released. My feeling was that this had gone on long enough that it was time to point the status of the fish. Added to that people that were unfamiliar with the fish were showing interest. Therefore my post instructing to release them, which was disputed, as I took it. This is what led to my retort. I would be happy to have some official clarification and I hope to get some. If you can keep them (or "you don't have to release them"), I will stop spreading misinformation while out and about on French Creek and related waters.

If I agreed with you we would both be wrong

They are to my knowledge "other game fish", with a daily limit of 50.

With Bowfin and other fish under the "Candidate" Status(Longnose Gar, River Redhorse), it is always SUGGESTED to release them.
If it wasn't a suggestion, it would say "No open season, catch and immediate release", like it does with species of the "Endangered" or some in the "Threatened" category.
But I'm not an official, so I'll wait for one to say that.

And I love Bowfin fishing. If I caught one big enough, and knew someone to do it, I'd get it mounted.
But the chances of that are slim, since they're stunted in Conneaut, because there's so many.
That's also the reason I believe keeping them from there is okay. But I did NOT infer that before just now. Quit reading between the lines. I also couldn't find it in my morals to keep one from another water, unless it was a huge fish, since I'm convinced the only reason they aren't at least "Threatened" is because of Conneaut.

****, people love to fight about stupid stuff on here don't they?

If your dumb enough to keep and eat a bowfin or river redhorse go right ahead lol... Bowfin are candidate species it does not seem so with the amounts of them around this area.. There are monster northerns and bowfin in Geneva is good thick fishin if you have a small watercraft its a good place to go and see the wildlife.. dont get shot lol.. . .
