Planer Releases

Ok, it looks like I'm gonna have to dust off the planer boards. What kind of releases do you guys use/recommend. I've used rubber bands, but not sure how they'll work with braid.

I'm not a fan of braid off of the boards especially with sticks, seems I drop 2 many feesh that way. Have specific mono rods for boards this year and have lost 2 eyes with over 50 coming to the boat so far, a drastic improvement over braid early last year.

I like the Scotty's and the Weldon's the best. If ur gonna run braid, get scotty's since they don't have rubber pads. Braid will wear groove in rubber pads and have a hard time releasing.

I've got 8 rods with braid and my 2 downrigger rods with mono, guess I could run the rigger rods off the boards. I'm gonna have to get a trailer to pull behind the boat soon .

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll probably pick up a few of each and see what works best for me. Hopefully will be a moot point shortly, I don't really care for running boards.

I have become a fan of rubberbands last season. I will buy at walmart shower curtain hooks (same this as the rings for offshore releases)And with the rubber band half loop them to the line and the open end of the band put on the showcurtain hook. most of the time the band breaks with a fish on, and if not a hook set will break the rubber band. They are cheap also!

After having a board line break last year with about 12 releases, that released and slid to the board, fell to the bottom of the lake cheap and efficient is the way i go.

    That sux man.

That's exactly what I've used in the past, but I've never used the boards much. Didn't have to, dipsy divers were working too good without them.

Back before braid was popular, we used homemade releases with the hard, black neoprene rubber circles, alligator clips and shower curtain hooks.  We used epoxy to glue the neoprene to the alligator clips and it worked well.  If you are having trouble with the braid wearing grooves, a harder durometer rubbber will probably keep that from happening.

Again, that is what we used to use but I have been out of that game for awhile.

If you run braid, go with the Off Shores....I use the OR-8 heavy tensions because I use them for muskies on St. Clair as well....You could always adjust for walleyes by putting the line in the middle of the rubber pads....for muskie though, I have to jam the line all the way back to hold the tension of the bigger plugs. With any releses though, the braid slips out easier than mono. If you're already spooled with the braid, I'd run the OR-8s and you'll be fine. They are not cheap....$8.99 a piece is the cheapest I could find....I bought a bunch pretty cheap at Sportsmen's warehouse when they were going out of business. I also rigged them up with aluminum climbing clips to easily clip to the board line and they work nicely. They are also large enough to slide down over the big eye screw on the board and hook on in case the mainline breaks, you won't lose 'em Good Luck.

I use the Weldon releases for mono and Braid. I also use rubber bands with both mono and braid. It solves the problem of the braid cutting into the rubber pincher pad and also acts as a strike indicator of sorts for small "junk" fish. The rubber band will stretch a little farther if a white perch or silver bass is tagging along. Thay are also relatively cheap at around $2.00 a piece.

Still the way to go, eyes.
We now use #5 dual lock snaps instead of shower curtain rings.
Rubber bands on braid work just fine.
