Michigan Fishing Trip

Well I just got back from my annual Michigan Salmon fishing trip and I figured I'd share some stories and pictures.  We fished the Pere Marquette river in baldwin.  For those who haven't heard of it, it has 100% wild fish.  The King salmon, coho salmon, and brown trout population is very very good.  It is also a decent steelhead river, but does not have as many as the erie tribs.  The majority of the river flows through state forest and most of the upper section contains a ton of gravel.

The PM is most well known for its Hex hatch in the spring.  From what I hear the hatches on this stream are the same if not better then what we have around here.  The big summertime attraction is nighttime mouse fishing for big resident browns.

Anyways our trip this year was a blast as usual.  The water was lower than I ever seen it but there is still a decent flow and the water temp is in the mid 50s.  Most of the trip was spent chuckin and duckin with shooting line for salmon.  I did hook some trout and steelhead smolts.  We fished 4 days with double digit hookups everyday.  Here is some pictures of the stream and some of the fresher fish I caught.

Nice pics. Sounds like a cool place to take a trip. I have heard about those browns you spoke too, definitley neat when you can be fishing for the salmon and then hook a big res brown.

The McCloud steelhead there was last stocked in the late 1800's.  Pretty impressive.   The skams are not wild but are strays from the Big manistee stocking.

    Fun trip I'm sure.

Nice pics Pat.  Thanks for posting.

The only thing better than 1 day of fishing is 2 days of fishing.

Great pictures!  Two years ago I went to Michigan with four other friends and fished the Betsy River for fresh chinooks.  What a blast!  The nicest thing about fishing there was the lack of crowds.  We always had the stream to ourselves.

It's good to hear from you again Ray.  We'll be there every year first week of October.  We used to go to NY but we can't stand the zoo.  One of these days I'm going to get a pontoon.  They are definately the way to go on the PM.
