Winter predictions?

I heard several times that we're supposed to get a ton of snow this season.

It seems like just yesterday that we were sitting in a boat in the beginning or middle of January at Shenango Lake.

What's everyone think this winter will bring as far as lakes freezing over and precipitation?

Ron I heard it is suppose to get cold but then turn into a pleasant weather system.  Something with the El-nimo affect.

The wooly catepillars have really long brown bands in the middle and almost no black at the tips...I think the saying goes that the longer the band in the middle the longer the winter.  That's all I've got.

I still can't believe we were in a boat in the middle of January, jigging for crappies.

It was also the first year I've ice fished. Bought a two man shanty, rods, the whole nine yards. Probably the last time I ever do it, either. I was just too paranoid the entire time which didn't make it the least bit fun for me, especially considering I can't swim.

I remember fishing Golden Run at Shenango and just hearing ice cracking here and there (I know there's another term for it because the ice wasn't really cracking) and that was pretty terrifying none the less.

If we get a lot of snow that might be bad news for ice fishers considering how it just serves as an insulator on the surface...

Ronnie, Don't give up on the ice fishing so soon. If you don't feel comfortable particularly on early ice, wait till it's a little thicker. For your own peace of mind wear a PFD of some sort, ice picks, etc. Just in case! Try arranging going with other people. You tend to get a little braver when someone is with you. As much as I enjoy fishing from a boat, steelhead fishing, wet wading a river, I can't wait till it freezes!!! Bring on the hard stuff.        Lou

Oh I never went out alone, and did have pfd's and ice picks. Still a little nerve racking.

I predict the weather will turn colder, the days shorter, and all the leaves will fall off. After those 3 prognostications, I'm not sure about any more than that...

Old Farmers Almanac said that December was supposed to be a bit above normal and January was supposed to start the "deep freeze".  Sounded a lot like last years forecast.  If you want to know when the ice will set in just keep an eye on the reports board.  When you see guys talking that they're getting burbot in the PI channel you have 4 weeks till ice up.  Last year around Christmas I kept telling people we'd be ice fishing by Jan 21'st...  I was off by 3 days, it was the 24'th.

Marty, I can't believe you sold that sled.  I guess it's not that bad, those Invaders didn't have a very good suspension.

Ronnie, it's called "booming".  You're talking to the one person that should be terified of ice fishing, I fell through twice when I was a kid.  Instead I can't get enough of it.  Learn what ice conditions are safe and you don't have to worry.  Myself shallow water 3" deep water 5".

For the Winter my prediction is locusts.

There's only one thing of certainty regading the upcoming Winter. Every single prognostication by the weather forecasters will be wrong.

i never went ice fishing either. last year i went out to give it a shot cause a relative told me the ice should be thick enough on wilhelm. i went out at one of the launches 25yds off shore where i knew the water was only waist high tops, to try a test hole. i started drilling and as soon as the auger went through it was like it freed a big air pocket and a 30 yd square of ice dropped 3-4" and had 2-3" of water rush over it. me and my buddy were shytn n gitn. after that we when over to the causeway where the ice was real thin n broke away 10-15' of ice with a stick and fished it off shore. never made it back out since. hopefully wishing though, we will get a good solid cold few weeks of weather and ill get a chance to give it a try. i went by kahle lake after that and there was quite a few people out icefishing there. i imagine the smaller the lake the tjhicker the ice gets quicker. best of luck for us fisherman any way.
