3-10-10

Fished the Susky this morning from 5 til 9. Caught 5 walleye(biggest was 24 inches), 3 bass and 2 big suckers. There were 3 boats out. Saw them catch 3 bass. Nice morning to be out.

So the walleye fillets in my neighbor's fridge aren't real? You guys stick to taking photos, I'll just keep CATCHING fish. Tell me where your car is. The next time I go fishing I will leave some fish heads on your hood. That's about as close to catching a fish as you guys can get.

    i like his reports.

Mind if I ask if you are on the southern (harrisburg south), middle (above harrisburgh) or the upper branches (western or northern branch) of the river?

I don't live in the area, but I pass by some of the areas for work, once in a while. Only have fished the susqy a few times and didn't have alot of luck unless I was in a boat. I am sure that I was in the wrong places probably. I did ok wading around the millersburg area for a couple hours last summer.

Hillbilly, I fish the Susquehanna near the towns of Sunbury and Shamokin Dam(Snyder Co.). I don't own a boat(my brother has 2 in Erie) but the areas I fish are long walks in chest waders. 99% of fisherman would never walk as far as I do. I am sure you know the best fishing is where most people won't walk to(LAZY). The Susquehanna was tough to learn(took me years) but once you learn the areas that hold fish, your golden. These guys don't understand I have fished Lake Erie for 34 years. An average day on Erie= an incredible day anywhere else. I only fish here because I have to. You can PM anytime.

I agree about erie. I decided last year that I don't want to move there or retire there because it would ruin all other fresh water fishing for me. I don't want every other place I fish to be a let-down or a disappointment, so I will just visit erie.

With a long walk, canoe, or small boat, river fishing can be every bit as productive as a day on erie, just with smaller fish. Fishing erie in the summer is alot more expensive than river fishing too, b/c of the boat you need. River fishing also offers you more species to fish for.

I will take my river fishing and visit erie.

I fished the north branch last year with a chump of a guide and I caught 4 different species of fish on crank baits. I was impressed.

Hillbilly, you don't need a boat to catch big fish in Erie during the summer months. It does help but its not the only way to catch big ones. Last year I caught many bass(largemouth and smallmouth, 5 and 6 lbers) from shore(piers, docks, wading). I catch all of my Northerns from shore. During July you can easily catch 6 or 7 different species of fish off of the North or South Pier. Good Luck  2 U!!!!

correct, but you have to wade/fish the bay or fish from a pier with a bunch of other loons.

I like to fish with myself and anyone that goes with me. I don't really want to see other people.

i just wanted to see a pic of the 30# carp he caught..
that would've made the list of the biggest carp caught this year considering 35# was the winner in '09

but instead he just gets mad.
oh well, im over it but i still wont believe he caught that fish

Please practice catch and release.  The susky is sick and needs every fish put back to create (hopefully) more fish.  The panfish were first, then the smallmouths, walleyes will be next.  Soon the only thing you'll be catching are carp and catfish.

unfortunatley till the PFBC makes the susky C & R and the In State and Out of State guides keep raping the river during the spawn, and inflating their numbers it's all but a lost cost.

    TIM,

you are so true.  And don't forget the excessive tournament pressure.  You would think that the tournament anglers and guides would be smart enough to think.. "hey you know where kinda killing our future here"  but yet they carry on with reckless abandon.

And the commissioners of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission play their fiddles on the bank as if nothing is wrong.  Oh yeah that right, "their studying the issue".

what a joke.,  they should all be fired.

Noplacelikehome: Keep the reports coming nice to read something from someone else who fishes, forget these clowns on here that are just waiting to follow the big white truck around that call themselves fisherman. We know what their all about and while they are setting home complaining about real threads on here their letting more fish for us to catch. I don't take pictures either a camera or cell phone would not last a half an hour on me while i am fishing.

You can have the fish- I'd rather be hunting arrowheads on the islands or along the banks.

haha, you mean the ones that are illegal to keep?

Ever find any? I think it would be cool

Arrowheads are illegal to keep? Yeah- I've found a few, but my looking at the ground vs. things found ratio is not good. Haha.

If it's on private land, they belong to the landowner.

If it's on public land, yes they are illegal to keep.

If it's on federal land, it's a felony to keep one.

Not kidding.  Did archaeology for a living for 5 years.  Some of it on the banks of the Susky when they expanded SR 11/15 north of Harrisburg.

You are right about the law.

I kept a lot of nice fossils that I found in Yellowstone. A lady that was walking by when I found a couple yelled at me and told me to put them back. I told her where she could go and kept them.

Another person told me about some kids who had been collecting elk and deer antlers that they found in Yellowstone. A ranger "caught" them and made them go back through the woods and drop them in different places... Assinine, if you ask me.

Thanks for clearing that up. I only hunt on farms where I have permission & the old farmers are very cool about it & let me hunt until they plant. Most around me have been in the same families since it was acquired through land grants. Many of the old farmers have great stories that have been handed down about those days. Since I love the history of our great state this makes it a win even if I find nothing.

I also have a friend who owns a 22 acre island on the Susquehanna & he allows me to look on it. I trade hunting time for a little labor to help keep the cabin, beach & all that up.

I love hunting artifacts as much as fishing.

I know how to make arrow/spear/knife points too, next time we fish, I'll bring you a few.  I used to flintknap alot before fly tying took over my relaxing hobby time.

ahha, me too.  Right around the time I started to get good enough to attempt flutes, I pretty much quit doing it.  It sucks when it takes a half hour to bang out a blank, then it snaps in half when you mess up a flute.
