first day

Since selling my pin and failing to obtain friendship with swinger, I've decided I will be pinning instead of slinging flies on the first day, just to embarrass the masses of hip wading bait slingers.

I'm quite excited to get remarks on the size of my "fly reel".  A flyfisherman last year and his buddy thought I was using a 10 ft. 10 wt., and proceeded to crack jokes across the stream.  Too bad for them the fish wanted powerworms and not poorly tied pt's.

who's pinning? what's your set up? what ya floating down yonder?

"Sure, we can assiduously three-quarter our wets downstream, mend and wait out each fly swing, over and over again, which to my way of thinking, anyway, relegates the angler to the role, not of nemesis as it should be, but of butler."

Ill be fishing my red kingpin opening day, spooled with 4 or 6lb siglon F. Rod will be my 10' 6" Beulah switch rod unless I get another short rod made for pinning. The custom 13 is way too much for all but the biggest of trout streams, especially around Erie. Float will be either a small raven around 2gr or a drenan loafer. I will be drifting either flies or small pink power worms and Ill have small egg sacks if necessary.

I haven't fished for trout on the opening day for 5 years.  If my guides weren't back-ordered, I'd be on the Yough with my new 15'er.......long before opening day.  I'll probably end up bluegill fishing instead.

the p-dub is a death warrant for all fish.

I honestly leave the same mainline on the pin for trout fishing as i do steelheading. 10lb mainline, i typically go to a lighter lead of 4 or 6lb and a 3 to 4 gram float. I only pin bigger streams like tionesta, redbank and the clarion river so i feel no need to downsize my mainline for a handful of fishing trips a season. Its all up to what you want to do, but you can probably get by with your regular steelhead set up.

I'm not sure if I would take the time to change mainlines it may get expensive in a hurry. If you have multiple reels for different situation then you could set them up differently. On FFc alot of those guys have smaller diameter reels for small water trout fishing. I think taking the mainline off of the kingpin and spooling it back up with 4lbs. would be a waste of money just do what avid said and go to lighter leader material.

I did for a few years. Would put the canoe in at Balltown and float halfway to Kelletville. Pitch the tent,
get smoked up , pass out, get up and catch some wild brookies, then continue down passed frog rock.
It always was a good time. A few times the canteen would be frozen and 2 inches of snow on the tent.
Too many aches to do that now. I either go to camp or fish below the dam at Shenango. But I know you allare going to have a blast. Thats what its all about , right?!
